I have confidence in Panthers QB Sam Darnold.  I imagine it would take some getting used to if you were a young (23 year old) person arriving in a strange city.
 
Plus, having to meet new teammates, form a social life and lead an NFL team that was placed on your shoulders with the expectations you would make them rise above their present low status.

You know, I've got a good feeling about Sam Darnold and the direction the team is headed. Funny as it sounds, you know, what we all saw on draft day is, you know, the proof that we have a really competent front office for the first time in a while. The fact that they made, you know, the move the get him in the first place, and, you know, leaving potentially starting caliber QBs on the draft board makes me all the more confident that they, you know, the front office thinks we have the QB of the future. And, you know, I don't get the idea that they would pull the trigger on him and, you know, give up that kind of draft capital if they didn't see something they can work with. Regardless of what we, you know, speculate about, or what we see in minicamp, or you know, training camp, if you don't have faith in Darnold, I think, you know, if you believe in the front office and coaching staff, then you have to believe he's the right guy.

Some of the belief in Sam Darnold’s ability to perform better here than he did in New York is the scheme and the improved players around him, although the question mark remaining at left tackle is a concern. A significant part of that is running back Christian McCaffrey, who described himself as 100% healthy after missing 13 games last year due to injury.

Darnold said some of McCaffrey’s skills as a receiver and a rusher compare to former Jets back Le’Veon Bell. The pair of new teammates have known each other dating back to their time in the Pac-12 when USC and Stanford faced off, but they only played in a game against each other in college once (a 27-10 Stanford win in 2016 that Darnold did not start). The pair has also been at workouts together in California multiple times, including this offseason.

What a difference from the introductory interview, he looked almost shell-shocked, this is an about-face. 
 

He looks more like the Sam I’ve seen through his college years.  He’ll never be this charismatic, emotional guy in front of the camera...but he won’t embarrass you either, or throw his coach and teammates under the bus, he’ll take the blame.  His personality is more open and different with his teammates, with a dry sense of humor.  It’s all about ball now, how he performs.

He’s never going to say ridiculous things, pout like a baby during press conferences, dress like a pimp, or insult a press member due to her gender.  
 

You had that already, right?  He’s a team player, it will never be just about him or petty vengeance.  Publicly. 😏

If he wants to endear himself to the fan base, all he has to do is go out there and perform well.

College graduates across the country manage to do so every year...

...and they do so successfully without even a sliver of the resources Sam has available at his fingertips.

      Who believes after Rico went off that Dave will go back to Chuba, go very pass happy again, run Chuba 7 times, and give Rico 5 carries?   he has a weird obsession with wanting to pass it over and over with Bryce.

      I never once said I believed in Sam. Only that he’s proof that the Jets and Panthers are bad organizations. You spent all that time on me. I’m flattered.

      Story of the year. Get down massively to Arizona, look like your first NFL game to throwing for more than 300 yards and getting the team to within 40 yards of a come back win. Get down 17-0 to Miami, execute the offense to outscore the Dolphins 27-7 the rest of the way. Defeat the Falcons 30-0 throwing for like 150 yards. Personally, I think it would be great to have retained Darnold. Darnold in this scheme with Canales would instantly make this team a contender for the NFC South. However that didn't happen.  I don't know what you do because when they run game gets shut down, and it will get shut down, you have to depend on Bryce to play efficiently. On one third down ball to someone (I forget who), when he was rolling out and made that throw close to the sideline to convert, the TV people would talking about how special that was. What I saw was another receiver streaking all alone 45 yards downfield, with about 5 yards of separation. Even while rolling out, an average QB is able to deliver that ball, signed, and sealed for a touchdown. Bryce's lack of deep ball ability is the achilles heel to this offense and it's something that can't be fixed.  I would love to be able to draft Carson Beck. I think he took a lot of crap at UGA which now seems unwarranted. Looking at how inefficient their offense is now compared to how it was with Beck at QB, and now how he has gone into the system Cam Ward was in and outperformed him massively in just pure execution and efficiency, along with the physical traits, tells me he will be a Top 3 pick. We won't have a Top 3 pick though. So what do we do? I have no idea. Canales is too good of an offensive coach for us to get a Top 3 pick and Bryce is inconsistent enough to get us a Top 10 pick. So absent finding a guy like Nix with tons of experience and good enough measurables, which requires great evaluations, I just think we are stuck.
