How much preseason time should Darnold play?

First half, first half, first quarter.

He's got to get out there and prove himself to the team. The questionable offensive line also needs as much practice as possible with him to learn his tendencies under real pressure and to understand his line calls.

The only guy who should get any sort of complete bench time in the pre-season is CMC.

As much as possible.

On the one hand, the more reps he gets, the better he should be in the new system and we really need that to be the case.

On the other hand, if he does get hurt, we're likely looking at a high draft pick for a QB or LT. It's another year lost but I'd rather him get hurt preseason than halfway through the year and end up at pick 8-15 where we just miss out on the elite level talent.

Spot on.

The time for pussyfooting around has passed...

...play his ass for the 1st half minimum in every game and possibly more in at least one game.

This is actually a tough one. Darnold needs as many live reps as possible to hopefully build his confidence up. On the other hand, this will be the longest regular season in NFL history and Darnold has never successfully completed an NFL season in his career due to injury or illness. Not to mention, it's highly likely he is going to be taking a fuging shelling behind that OL we have assembled currently.

I guess we may as well play him a lot in the preseason. If he gets injured behind that line, it was likely bound to happen anyway. At least if he goes down in the first half of the season we might have enough info to decide to move on or keep him. With PJ Walker and Will Grier backing him up, we can be in prime position to draft an actual franchise QB again.

I would think we will be seeing some pretty vanilla stuff in the preseason, so I am not sure his reps will be that deep into the new system. Hopefully he has that fairly down after a full offseason. As an NFL veteran, I would hope he can digest that a lot more quickly than a rookie.

With only 3 pre-season games I would say 1Q the first, 2Q the 2nd, and like 2 drives the 3rd one then let's get to real games.

It's strange that the Panthers practice with 2 of the 3 teams so they will be going against them all week then play the game. There are alot of reps for Sam or the other guys against another opponent.

Good point. Our scrimmages against other teams will give us some additional reps.

You mean to tell me that this front office and coaches have yet to fix this OL? Did we even improve from last year or did we get worse? Why would this team trade for a QB who never had any protections in NY to bring him down here to a similar situation, and think that he can succeed?

I think they seem to not very much value the OL. It's odd because this is the same thing we dealt with Rivera and Hurney.

Actually, this goes back to Gettleman. We have made so many poor OL decisions in the past decade.

Only thing I would add is maybe in game 2 bring him out for a series to start the 3rd quarter.

We have potential starters at all 5 positions.  i would let Darnold start the 1st quarter and Rhule should let all those that could starton the Oline play at some point in the 1st quarter with him.

CMC one series.

You tryin' to kill this guy?????

    • With the contract money an OT first rounder makes you can ALWAYS get a new girlfriend.  And probably an upgrade at that.  You only got 2 parents.
    • Brother. You are wholly confusing comparing situations and applying actual standards like most other franchises do like simply getting into a playoff series and winning at least 1 or 2 series games with praising. Nobody is praising the Hawks. Nobody is praising the Magic. Nobody here likes those teams. But reality is reality. The Hawks like other franchises have traded players fired coaches etc but they can still win a couple playoff games. How is that not the bare floor for you or anyone else? What are we doing here if it isn't? We've seen eye to eye on many things over the years. But you are in the camp on the Hornets where you are emotionally attached to LaMelo where you feel the need to carry his water like he's got that juice. That's cool that you feel that way. It's your prerogative. But I differ from that viewpoint entirely. If he had that juice we would not have gotten wiped off the court in 2 play in games with 2 different coaching staffs and rosters. if people don't like hearing that well I'm sorry but how the hell is this team ever going to get better and ultimately go anywhere in the postseason if we just blindly pat them on the back for getting their asses whooped before they actually even get into the real playoffs? There seem to be some Bryce Young level standards being applied here. That's wild to me. But to each his own.
    • Proctor/Freeling were always the belles of the ball where we were picking. What those two *could* become at OT was far greater than what others could be at their respective positions and I’m glad our FO could see that.
