What was the explanation for punting on the Jets 33 yard line?

I just tossed it up to bad coaching. We should have went for it on 4th and 6 from the 33 if we didn’t trust the kicker. Punting made absolutely zero sense.

Also a few drives later when it was 4th and 2 inside the 10 yard line we should have kicked the easy FG to put some points on the board as it was still 0-0. Oh course we end up fumbling and turning the ball over.

Sorry but that is just terrible decision making on all accounts. Even the shitty CBS commentators were wondering wtf Rhule was thinking.

Why in the world would you think that someone has to be 100 percent one way or another? Rhule makes good and bad decisions like everyone else. He can be a genius about one thinkg, and a dumbass about another.

Yeah you can evaluate individual coaching decisions.  The problem is when you blanketly use a coach's judgment as an indictment on the player, i.e. Rhule didn't put Santoso in to attempt a 50-yard FG...ergo Santoso sucks, has a weak leg, etc.

So many people here did the same with Rivera back when he didn't trot out Gano for any 50+ yard FGs.  They assumed that meant Gano has a weak leg when clearly that isn't the case.  Santoso is very much unproven one way or the other, so to use Rhule's judgment call not to let him kick the FG as evidence that Santoso sucks is blindly putting faith in Rhule's judgment.

I have to admit that it pissed me off and had to take a walk. It is just not how I would play. The defense was kicking their tail. And now I won't to see if they keep struggling scoring points. Coaching is a question. They need to STEP UP TOO.

Ultimately I think it comes down to 1) not trusting the kicker and 2) the defense destroying the Jets offense. At that point the Panthers D was making the Jets look like a middle school team.

Rhule was probably assuming they’d score another three and out and be right back in Jets territory a few minutes later.

That said, I think it’s a dumb decision and he should have gone for it using the same logic.

They were hoping to pin the jets back inside their 5 yardline, forcing a 3 and out and getting the ball back with good field position.

It actually wasn't a bad call if you don't think your kicker can make the fg.

7 out of 10 times it would have worked, bis is the main reason but it wasn't a great kick, and the jets got themselves out of it.

Yeah and Charlton had a terrible game he was terrible the whole game.

As much as I hated the punt, it is good to see Rhule is unsatisfied.

Well, the real problem….is Rhule going into the season with a guy that had shown for a half decade he wasn’t a NFL FG kicker.   Just a very bad kickoff specialist.

hard to champion Rhule for a problem of his own creation.
