Yahoo.com article: How Phil Snow turned the Panthers’ defense into the NFL’s new nightmare

Gotdamn, this quote...

It's entirely possible that the primary reason Carolina's defense is ready to set fire to the NFL is that, outside of the fact that Snow now has the personnel to run everything he wants, a college-minded defensive coach who learned to defend modern offenses at an elevated level now has the same thing on lock in the pros. It was bound to happen eventually, and right now, nobody in the league seems to know what to do against it.

as far as worry warts two games in the season............fans tend to climb a wall of worry all season as their team progresses................and you can't blame them because one bad hit to a starting QB of any team in this league could sink your season fast....

In regards to the Snow defense..............time will tell.........the fact the high flying Saint offense from week 1 performed so poorly against Panthers D in week two may factor in with some key starters missing due to covid on the part of the Saints.........

Meanwhile Panthers have trying to keep a healthy o-line a bit of a challenge this week.

Here we are doing the exact same ordinary corner blitz 3 times in a row

Big part of play calling is out guessing your opponent. I'm sure after we did the exact same blitz twice in a row they were thinking "well they sure as hell aren't going to do the same thing THREE times in a row"

Snow is extremely legit and I said it last year when people were ragging on the D without being able to see the significant roster holes he was working with.

But, 8 consecutive draft picks spent on the defense including two top 10 overall picks and signing last year's 3rd ranked sack artist certainly haven't hurt efforts.

Rhule is clearly trying to build the Panthers the same way he build Temple and Baylor - dominant defense paired with decent offense. I know we can field a competitive team that way, but I'm not certain we can compete for titles that way. We shall see.

How is it clear he is trying the build the Panthers like Temple and Baylor, defend your argument...

Its the epic talent on the line and man coverage on the receivers taking away the quick throws.  They have to go to total pass pro, removing at least one (TE) or two (TE and RB) pass options and they can't double team on the line leaving 1-1 match ups.  With 1 on 1s,  Brown, Daquan, and Nixon  are eventually going to get thru.

The 2020 draft was fantastic at adding serious defensive talent to this team.   And adding Horn & Bouye might be the last pieces of this puzzle.   Being able to have CB who can go single coverage on talented receivers really opens up the possibilities for exotic blitzes and crazy pressure on the QB.

This. I want this more than anything.

I want it to be better than the shelacking we gave Romo and Dallas, on Thanksgiving that one time.

I have to admit that this is the game I want us hitting on all cylinders.  I want to beat them so bad that old Jerry "the crypt keeper" Jones is too embarrassed to bring his creepy ass before the cameras after the game.  That my friend is how you put on a beat down.

sure would be sweet to take houston to the woodshed on national tv. that'd trigger a 2015-esque breakout in terms of media coverage and hype

not so sure about this. It's the lowly Texans on Thursday night and still early in the season. I don't think we'd get any more respect even if we smash them 42-0 and send their QB back to pre school. Which isn't a bad thing, kinda like flying a bit under the radar for as long as we can.

I disagree.  A dominant showing against Texans will show that we are for real.  Good teams beat who they're supposed to beat.

Our formations can be odd, but that's not the secret sauce.  Its the epic talent on the line and man coverage on the receivers taking away the quick throws.

That is why it will take a while for others to copy cat Snow. Rhule spent 8 consecutive draft picks (plus a few more) and a good part of this off season building this defensive personnel. Snow did well last season, as the article points out, with only 1/2 the pieces in place. NOW he has the rest of them, so he can do everything he wanted.

Yeah, assuming we do whoop the poo out of Houston tomorrow, the hype train is going to be firmly rolling down the tracks.  We are going to be the talk of the league - even more so than we already are after last week.

IDK guys....this time around just feels different.  It feels like we are actually building something long term special here, instead of these 1 year wonder flash in the pan teams.  With all the youth we've got, all the studs up and down the starting lineups on both sides of the ball, all the cap space we've got, you've got to think its only going to improve moving forward.

    • alright im going to post seriously here for a second what you are seeing with bryce young is the confluence of some well understood cognitive phenomenon: mistaking what you want to happen for what is happening and working backwards from there (call this working backwards from a conclusion/cognitive dissonance, im sure im mixing up the terms a little here), and getting scammed and defending the scammer (call this the gregor macgregor affect i don't know there's probably a term somewhere, google is unusable.) People who care a lot about the Panthers want them to have a good player at the most important position in the game, and the Panthers gave up a ton to be in position to take one, and they took one, so that must be the good player. There is obviously an overload of available information any lay person can find that they can use to convince themselves that what they wanted was happening. to the lay person, it was aggressively obvious right away that it wasn't going to work out. it was clear halfway through the first quarter of the atlanta game he did not belong in the nfl. a bird's eye view of the season shows at best the second worst season ever. But people who really wanted something to be true cannot accept this, and instead pick apart details or blame things or wishcast into the future or move goalposts to defend it because they cannot accept that what they wanted and what they believed they had is actually....not there. People do this all the time. I've got a patient right now in late stage frontotemporal dementia and her POA just will not listen to me or hear what I'm saying because he was told I'm an amazing provider with inpatient neuro experience and when I look at him and say "you need to understand expectations" or "she has no quality of life" he just refuses to understand what I'm saying. The second is this weird trait we have where if we get scammed, some people will defend the scammer. if you get bored read up on gregor macgregor and the mosquito coast, but basically he was charging people to join an expedition to settle this absolutely poo stretch of land in south america. all these people either died or had to be rescued, but when they returned to their home towns they refused to believe they'd been scammed, blamed other things, or even blamed themselves. This guy was CLEARLY a scam artist but they could not accept they, smart rational people etc had been scammed. This is some weird vestigial evolutionary trait that helped a group of monkeys work together to take the watering hole and no of course there's no modern day political equivalent why you imply such a thing. Panthers' fans were scammed with Bryce Young. Tepper (david or nicole im not sure which) were scammed with him. Obviously it's more complex than one scottish dude drunkenly walking into a bar in Buenos Aires but it's a similar setup. And yes the stakes are lower than moving to the other side of south america but a scam is a scam is a scam. It is very difficult for people to admit that they, ostensibly smart, rational, logical people would believe and buy in to something so obviously rotten so the blame has to go somewhere else. Every problem with Bryce has an cause external to him, and all problems will be solved by /random thing that has happened the specifics don't really matter. Currently it's a guy who no other team interviewed for the HC position. if you read this and your first instinct is that i'm attacking you, you need to take a deep breath and reevaluate some things. this is an opportunity for personal growth and you should take it. surely some people will counter with "well it's just football it's not that serious and why does it hurt to be excited for something?" This is what's called a "though terminating cliche" and is just a cutesy little phrase meant to stop the conversation and help the person using it avoid defending their terrible ideas. and to the person saying "lol wow you typed all this up u mad," <puts poo posting hat back> don't judge what i do by your own limitations. I'm much higher functioning than you and this was neither time or energy consuming for me. This is a casual thought. I am learning not to hold people to the same standards I hold myself, so I don't blame you for reacting defensively out of a sense of wonder and inferiority.

    • The way they have been acting makes me think they deserve that outcome. They should have celebrated the hell out of the free pick for sure but what they have done since the draft just looks like they learned nothing from their team history or what Carolina went through last year.
