Matt Rhule says the Panthers offense is about to have a "vastly different look," redefined with more of an emphasis on the run game.

It's the right move. If you want your team to be defense-forward, you need your whole team built around that. Run the ball, no turnovers, play good defense, and make just enough plays in the passing game to win. It's classic Rivera. It's classic Fox. It now seems like it's also classic Rhule/Snow.

This philosophy can get you to 8-9 wins. On rare instance, your offense can get hot and make a bit of run, but it's a far more difficult way to try to win. Not only are the rules slanted toward offense, but as you've seen, there are just some phenomenal athletes on offense. Those guys are going to be beat perfect defense. Think about the TD that Horn gave up in Week 1 to Davis, or the TD that Thielen scored yesterday.

(a small aside: its clear Rhule is a figurehead/motivator for Snow, but philosophically, Rhule's longtime mentor is the leader of the team).

This is true. Perhaps he should have gotten a more proven NFL OC or DC to help navigate that curve or at least an advisor.

Associate head coach, assistant head coach....something.

I distinctly remember quite a few Huddlers saying they hoped we would get some longer tenured NFL coaches on the staff to help them out. It just didn't really happen. The bulk of the NFL experience on the staff currently is with the positional coaches, of which only one has any experience at the NFL coordinator level.

I think that will prove to be a mistake in the long run.

Being happy and being realistic about a team that just came out of its 1st year in a rebuild are two different things bro.

But are we rebuilding?  We have traded away picks for a QB and 2 corners. Rebuilding teams don’t trade picks for players. They trade players for picks.

They arent going anywhere with the plan they have now....might as well go that way. Especially after investing big time in the defense.

I agree. Heck, if nothing else, Rhule could have done like Ron did and call older, proven NFL coaches for advice.

yeah, but remember this preseason when we attempted to see if our starters could line up and run when the other team knew it was coming? They got destroyed.

we don't have the bodies to run into a defense that knows it is coming.  Maybe the best RB in football can pull some magic but outside of that it seems like a horrible idea.

our rushing TDs in the redzone are a byproduct this year of Joe Brady already scheming around the fact that we can't lineup and run at teams when they know it is coming.   It why he started running Sam so heavy.  Because we can't line up and just run it at teams.

Rebuilding teams fill gaps … how they do it doesn’t define whether or not it is a “rebuild.”

you rebuild any way that you can. Rams rebuilt their franchise via draft, off-season acquisitions and trade capital. There is no “one way” to rebuild a franchise.

As I do agree with you, they traded for young unproven players. You can argue the gilmore trade, but for an injuries guy that will give us some action we are looking forward to what he can teach the most. Also, a lot of trades have been for the defensive side of ball. Not to win us games, but to keep us in games. I fully expect us to go OL and offense heavy next draft/off-season. If we don't... then well idk what to say. We traded for a QB that can act as a younger bridge QB. Darnold is nothing more than a bridge QB with the possibility of being a franchise guy. That was just a gamble. Allows us not to have to draft a rookie and get him killed by our OL by also building a defense that can keep us in games. If Darnold were to be a franchise guy then it would have sped our rebuild up much more... however he hasn't. So here we are. We aren't behind course by any means, but we aren't ahead of course like some thought after going 3-0 either

Yeah, for all the grief Brady gets for some of the "WTF" play calls, we don't have the luxury of running simple plays that most teams could execute with reasonable success rates.

    • Oh it's nothing elite, but we played without Horn last year.  Gilly playing at 80% is better than any CB2 we have had in a moment.  Luvu was fun, but he was out of position in Evero's defense.  Jewell is a tackling machine and has had over 100 in 3 of his last 4 with his highest being at Denver with Evero.  Pass Rushing and CBs are strong red flags but they also were last year.  On paper it's the same or maybe slightly better than last year and Evero had them keeping us in some games.  Hell our 2 wins were due to the defense and the kicking game.
    • I mean best case scenario is horn plays 15ish games, brown and clowney replicate last years stats, we sign gilmore and he reverts back to form after his injury but even then we still lack pass rush and our linebackers are dogshit.  And thats best case.  If horn goes down and if clowney starts showing his age then it could get ugly.  We are going to miss the tenacity of luvu.
