Panthers 3rd Quarter Struggles

This has stood out this season, however if you look at the numbers, this has been a Panthers problem since Matt Rhule became the head coach on the offensive side of the ball(although it has gotten worse in 2021). The PPQ differential in the 3rd quarter this year is a startling -4.5. That is the largest single quarter scoring deficit we have seen since 2017 when we had a -4.5 point 4th quarter.

1st Quarter

2020 Offense PPQ: 5.6

2021 Offense PPQ: 5.5

2nd Quarter

2020 Offense PPQ: 6.7

2021 Offense PPQ: 5.9

3rd Quarter

2020 Offense PPQ: 3.6

2021 Offense PPQ: 2.1

4th Quarter

2020 Offense PPQ: 6.0

2021 Offense PPQ: 7.0

Interestingly, this is not the same for the defense:

1st Quarter

2020 Defense PPQ: 5.3

2021 Defense PPQ: 2.4

2nd Quarter

2020 Defense PPQ: 7.3

2021 Defense PPQ: 4.1

3rd Quarter

2020 Defense PPQ: 5.0

2021 Defense PPQ: 6.9

4th Quarter

2020 Defense PPQ: 7.5

2021 Defense PPQ: 5.8

Brady definitely seems to be learning on the job, and finding that his schemes are a lot tougher to pull off when he doesn't have that LSU bench going against college competition. We've got some really good skill players, but so does everyone else in the NFL. I think he will adapt, but the growing pains are going to be particularly painful.

If just blaming Sam Darnold for everything is considered lazy and hating then Joe Brady shouldn't be the only target either. He didn't hire himself and his boss wasn't catered to and paid 60 million dollars to pass the buck. If it's an issue and has been all season figure it out. Otherwise this is entering Ron Rivera pass the buck waters.

Rhule deserves more blame than anyone in the franchise other than perhaps David Tepper. Ultimately, Rhule took a job where he had complete control of coaching staff hires, general manager hires and final say on personnel decisions. The buck ultimately stops with him. He chose all these coaches and players that aren't performing well.

So, he should absolutely shoulder the bulk of the blame for the OL, Darnold and Brady's struggles. Those were 100% his decisions.

Excellent strawman argument there Frank

What's your honest take on Rhule? I like him I've been patient yes we've been often critical but I'm not one of those who has called for his job. That being said it would be very inconsistent to overlook issues like this when we were quite brutal on Rivera for his repeated flaws early on and his coordinators falling on their swords for his teams inadequacies. From the looks of it this Panthers staff could really use some nfl experience. When we hired Rhule most here had a big sigh of relief bc he sounded open to any and all new methods instead of falling back on the same tired approach to a fault. Hopefully we see more of that through the second half of our season.

    • I did not want to start or even think about *if* BY reverts back to pre-non last 9 games.   There is a lane in which Panthers are looking QB after this season, I feel its higher than most will realize. I mean....not kidding... has any team ever traded up to 1st overall twice in the teams history? I don't even want to think within 3 years, just foresee Tepper squeezing Dans and Brandts sacs to the point were they are forced to trade up for a another savior.....   The kicker is I feel this way with BY playing good-great..... I think there with be non-fixable problems for contract negotiations between BY&reps vs Panthers org on the whole. You can not pay 50+ million per over few years with 70% guarantees for 3,303 yards 15 TDs and 9 INTs......Cursed I tell you....
    • It's not surprising, but it's still surprising that many of these guys don't manage their money in such a way that provides them and their families a better lifestyle than most for the rest of their lives without even working a nine-to-five. I can't imagine making over a 100 mil for a decade and ultimately ruminating about supporting my family due to financial issues.
    • That why i mentioned the KC dynasty. Those three different playoff loses were not Allens fault, in fact 1-2 plays and Bills win. KC just have better players and better coaches and more luck.  Defense-wise, Bills have been trying to crack the Reid-Halhomes magic. Its near impossible with rules and KC home field advantage. Spags has started to force the league in naming him the best DC in NFL history. I agree if you take away Bill bielacheat.... Add in Andy Reid the best QB coach and brilliant play designer/play-caller, I mean that's too much for one QB to over-come on his own.  Just trolling or not, bad is bad scot. Allen is legit as any one QB has ever been.
