Rebuild What, Exactly?

The term, by definition, implies there was something built to begin with.

The 2021 Carolina Panthers have used both "rebuild" and "win now" at various times this season, depending on what the roster happened to look like at the time.

But, look, there is no rebuilding of something that has yet to be built, and the Carolina franchise is nothing more than an as yet unrealized vision for someone to conjure. The team has yet to find a franchise QB, has drafted horribly the past couple years with nothing to show and the future draft looks bleak thanks to offering those picks up for questionable acquisitions.

The Panthers do not have a single player on this roster that anyone can stand up and say, "This is the guy we need to build this team around." Christian McCaffrey? How do you build a team around a player who might get you 8 healthy games a year? Any of the WRs? How about finding someone who can get them the ball first. And with no draft picks to land a top tier talent any time soon, why keep the coaching staff who essentially demolished what remaining pieces left over by the Hurney architecture.

Look at it this way, Panther fans, someone has to start from ground zero and there's not a lot worse they can become.

Carolina was a competitive team as recently as 2017, taking the Saints to the wire in the Wild Card round, and that was also only 2 years after the Super Bowl season. Mismanagement and injuries since that point derailed any momentum/structure they had at that point so yes, when Rhule was brought on in 2019 it was IMO fair to think of it as a rebuild. It is, unfortunately, still ongoing and what has happened in 2020 and 2021 may require a rebuild of the rebuild.

Agreed, this coaching staff demolished this team and it seems like they aren't done yet.

I just want to know what the fug they are trying to build that they think it's going as planned?

Personally, I think they're just making up this poo as they go and the sooner Tepper comes to this conclusion, we can stop the damage and get someone in here who can actually build a pro team.

CMC is our highlight player, but he's not built to run it up the middle all the time. Especially when the opposing team knows exactly what play we're running the entire game.

When you don't have a franchise QB you need to find one first and foremost. Bringing in a veteran QB triggers the QB limbo loop.

id trade him in a heartbeat if we could get some draft picks for him

but he is an injury waiting to happen every play...nobody gonna give up much for him

    • While it's fair to question how impactful a player's relationship with a coach is (especially if someone has questions regarding said coach), it's important to also evaluate the difference between the players here. Jordan Fuller was pick #199 in the 6th round while Justin Simmons was #98 in the 3rd round. Jordan Fuller might have gotten a Super Bowl ring while he was with the Rams, but he got it while on the IR. Justin Simmons, on the other hand, is a x2 Pro-Bowler (2020, 2023), x4 second-team All-Pro (2019, 2021 - 2023), and was the NFL co-leader in INTs (2022). Simmons has also fallen off in the last couple of seasons though, grade-wise. He very well might not be that same player, which could be why the Falcons have elected to replace him with Fuller. As far as getting the best out of what he has, asking him to produce with a starting DL of A'Shawn Robinson (63.56% of the defense's snaps), LaBryan Ray (51.48%), and Shy Tuttle (50.08%) isn't reasonable. Wonnum only played in 8 games, but had the second most % of snaps (37.27%) at EDGE behind Clowney (53.53%). The second-string DL based on snap % was... and don't read this if you just ate... Charles Harris (34.48%), DeShawn Williams (27.67%), and Nick Thurman (19.7%). The second-string EDGEs based on snap count would be DJ Johnson (32.27%) and Cam Gill (18.14%). With the investments made in the run defense this season though, especially on the defensive line, it's more than fair to demand a complete turn around from last season.
