Should we draft IOWA center Tyler Linderbaum in the 1st round or go with a LT?

Based on his athleticism, age and frame I think he skyrockets up draft boards

if that happens, he'll go to jacksonville. They need protection for Tranny. Unless some defensive player is a mammoth. Or khan says fug it and drafts another QB. Cross is who i want currently. We'll end up with the best linebacker in the draft, draft another tackle with our next pick in what the fourth? Rhule and Fiterrer will fug this up.

Normally I'd say go Tackle, but that Linderbaum (sp?) Kid would be the QB of the oline and offer an anchor of talent and accountability, to build around.

How much better is he then the 2nd or 3rd ranked center that you could get 2 rounds later?  I honestly dont know but at pick 6 is the range monster tackles come off the board.

And I am still not understanding this bullshit that Neal will be a RT and Ikem will be a guard.   They were all world at left tackle especially akem.

I like akem, cross or neal in no particular order.  We probably will have our pick of 2 of the 3.  However if we had our LT already then Green sounds like a damn dream come true.  That dude is smart and is crazy aggressive.

Quick question for all of the folks saying that we can get a quality center in the 2nd or 3rd.

First and foremost, with what picks? Second and most importantly, who? Zach Tom out of Wake Forest? A guy that has at best been seen as a late 3rd rounder? The drop off is HUGE and you still end up overdrafting a guy.

I don’t think BC is anywhere as talented as say Cross or Ekwonu. We could have walked Humphrey’s name up to the podium instead of Marshall. We’ve had two easy chances at all pro type Cs the past 3 drafts. Give me Ekwonu (feels like a Slater to me) and put BC at LG day one and stop moving him the fug around and we can pick up a C and RG with our day 3 picks this year and day 2 picks next year. That’s an OL I’d love to see. If we pass on LT, there’s a chance we aren’t in position to get a top one for years. They are like QBs sometimes you have quality ones and sometimes you have Dillard and Little.

BC isnt even playing the same sport as Evan or Ikem.  They are both head and shoulders above him.  Cross is a bit more of a "project" dude to his age and frame.  Look at him now at 305 and he is slender. once he gets another 20lbs on him he may be a damn animal combined with his violent playing style.   I am not asking for much just one of those 3 I dont care

The highest drafted center in the last 25 years was Damien Woody in 1999 at #17 however guys like Bradberry and Ruiz were both taken high in recent years.  Teams are placing higher value on them in today's NFL.  Many reasons why so Linderbaum could be an option.  But Ekwonu could be the guy as well.  Looks like many are plaving him at the top of the OL rankings.

Notably, TDN has him as their #1 OL, and #5 overall.

Their QB order is 1-Pickett (#18), 2-Corral (#25), 3-Ridder (#32), 4/5 (#39/40) Howell/Strong

Unless we are picking a stud QB we need to trade back and accumulate picks. They should have traded down last year with the Bears if they didn’t want Fields. Corner is such a luxury position for a team with many other needs.

I hate this team right now. Dumb move after dumb move after dumb move.

I like Linderbaum but there’s examples of really good Cs in the 2nd round of most years. LT is much more spotty. It’s just below QB. If you have a chance to take a franchise QB at 6, you do that first, then a LT, then probably a DE, etc. C at 6 is a complete reach regardless if they’re the best.

Are you saying LT's bust at the same rate as qb's?   Your wording is a bit confusing there.  Top of the draft tackles are pretty safe bets on the whole

We’ll know more at the combine and Senior Bowl (not sure if invite list is final yet).

QBs at Senior Bowl should be interesting with Willis, Pickett, Ridder and Strong. That’s 4 of the top 6 and Corral got hurt so not sure how much he’ll be able to do. Not that I want a QB this year, just that maybe someone shines like Herbert did. People don’t forget that. If Willis and Pickett look great we will likely get some phone calls.

It will definitely be in our interest to hype these guys up so I foresee a lot of rumors with basically every top-QB prospect and us.  Pickett will be the loudest (and could be the pick), but if Corral, Ridder, Howell or Strong end up being looked at favorably, it's in our interest value wise.

Toney was picked where the Bears were and there was a pretty big dropoff around that pick to 2nd round tier guys IMO.  The 2nd round is where we got too cute.  I wanted Slater badly (before the draft) but I do see the argument with Horn even though another defensive player that high was hard to swallow after the Teddy-Brady campaign.

Could have taken some completely formidable LT prospects in Sam Cosmi or Dillon Radunz in R2.  I really don't see how they valued  a trade back/pick accumulation that netted Terrace Marshall THAT much higher than just grabbing someone to fill our biggest need outside of QB.

People need to consider positional value also, not just how much value they add to winning but their cost relative to replacing them in free agency.

Here is why center is riskier than a LT:

#6 pick is going to get a 4 year contract worth about $8m a year.

The 12th highest center in the league makes less than that.  The 5th highest only makes $10.8m.

So basically, if you draft a center that high he better turn out to be one of the best centers in the league or you are losing value, and even if is a top-5 center you still aren't gaining as much value as a player at a different position.

In comparison:

The fifth highest LT in the league makes $18m a year, the 10th makes $14.9m.

The 20th highest makes $8m.

Now of course salary isn't always equal to production, but you can make the argument that if you draft a LT and if he just turns out to be average it's still a good deal relative to his rookie pay scale.

You can actually miss on more high value positions in the draft and still come out ahead of a team that hits on a higher percentage of low value positions.
