INDIANAPOLIS — The Carolina Panthers created $11 million in salary cap space on Friday by restructuring the contract of veteran offensive tackle Taylor Moton, according to a league source.

Moton will still earn an identical amount, $16 million in 2022, through this simple restructure of his salary in his four-year, $71.246 million contract. He has a $200,000 workout bonus.

The contract will be prorated into future years, adding $3.7 million in additional salary cap impact annually. His original deal included a $15 million signing bonus, $49.6 million guaranteed, and an average of $17.811 million annually.

In 2023, Moton is due an $11 million base salary and a $6.6 million roster bonus. That is due on the third day of the league year. He can earn an additional $1 million if named first-team or second-team All-Pro.

In 2024 and 2025, he’s due a $14.3 million base salary. He also has a $3 million roster bonus due on the third day of the league year each of those seasons.

Why?

Good lord he's about to trade Moton.

I would prefer this current regime not monkey around with contracts anymore.  I fear they will screw it up so bad you couldn't get anyone to come in here even if Tepper paid them twice what he paid Rhule.

That’s not true. I’ll come. Pay me twice what Rhule got and I’ll start tomorrow.

I hate moving money into the future so Rhule can try to "win-now" in year 3.  What the hell is this "process" anyways?  Tepper is a moron for not firing this guy.

We're gonna be paying this roster until 2030 at this rate.

Maybe I misread it but I thought it moves the bulk of the money up front?

Yeah, giving Rhule and Fitterer 11 million more to spend is like flushing good money down a toilet.

Am I not right in thinking at one time recently we had a decent amount of cap space? WTF did we do?

It's like we sent the kids to the store and they came back with a six pack of Tab, two bags of Cool Ranch Doritos and $1.38 in loose change.

Is this the crap we have to show for close to $200 million??? Of the top 3 we have effin' Sam Darnold and Robby Anderson??? I know, I know Shaq Thompson is #2 between those guys but he's more valuable than the two of them put together!

Do I read it right that we've got $14 million in dead money tied up in Matt Paradis, Haason Reddick and Tre Boston???

    • Night and day difference in the front office investements.  Since Morgan has been in the FO (5 years)....4 out of 5 first round picks have been offensive players.  The one defensive pick was a corner. Expand it out to the first 2 rounds? 7 out of the 9 picks have been offensive.  That IMO is why our D sucks so bad.   You build defenses up front.   Carolina hasn't been investing there.  Ron's first 5 years? 3 of the 5 first round picks were defensive players.  Expand it all to include second rounders  7 of the 10 picks were defensive.  All front 7 players.
    • I think he gets this year to show what he can do.  Last year, we had a lot of injuries. This year, we should have some players, even if we lose one or two.  It's the first preseason game.  Some of the starters weren't even in it.  There is no scheming or game planning.  Let's see how guys do when it counts. I think we have a GM that knows a thing or two about defense.  Let it play out.
    • I was ok with the mentor aspect of keeping Dalton, but wow has he fallen off the deep end. The slow behind the WR interception was awful. I keep hearing our WRs created no separation, but on that particular play dude was wide open and Dalton couldn't get it to him with a clean pocket. Next year, we need to address the backup QB spot haaaaaard!
