Exactly. Gutting the team for Watson would have been a great mistake in my opinion. It  would take a lot  more than a Watson QB upgrade to make  the Panthers a great team, considering what they would have to give up to obtain him.

im not sure why deshaun would want to go to the saints anyways, they are a year away from total rebuild.

His base salary in 2022 is $35M.  Looking just at the cap, Seattle can afford Watson right now.  They are the only ones that could take his salary without touching anybody else. 

We are second, but would be $6M under water.  People also need to remember we'd have to clear more out than that, and the players being mentioned in a trade are still on their rookie deals so their cap impact is not dramatic.

The Steelers are $2M worse off than us, the Eagles $6M.  Those numbers are still in the realm of possibility without screwing everybody in the process.

Tampa, the Saints, and Vikings in that order are all under water and it would take a lot of work to make room.  Tampa has the most dead cap already, then the Saints.  They have challenges already without even considering Watson's contract.

Is it possible for those bottom three to get themselves into a position to take on a $35M contract this year?  On paper, probably but it will take 6 CPA's and 2 or 3 Economists to figure out how to pull it off.

Crazy thought ... What if Tampa screws up their future cap to get DW causing Brady to unretire since Tampa cannot pay both and gets his trade to San Fran.

I don't think that helps them much.  Essentially, they are playing that game without the trade with Brady right now.

Somebody that understand the ins and outs of trades and dead money can probably help, but as I read it, his dead cap is mostly unamortized signing bonus right now, to the tune of $32M.  They are eating $8M of that this year and the rest in 2023, at least as it stands right now.  His 2022 salary is only $9M. 

So, depending on the timing of things, bringing him back and trading him may actually cost them a ton.  I think the Watson drama would have to drone on for several months to avoid eating the rest of the bonus in 2022.  It sounds like it might be ending even as we speak.

But again, I might be all wrong on how that works.

      Major Concerns with this team…with numbers

      The good news is that we are pretty uniquely well established to address all of our needs this season. We have $14m real cap space, and something like $40m in trade deadline cap space. Not sure exactly how that works out. But, we have the room to absorb any bad contracts. With recent rule changes regarding retention, that went into effect this season, we now have a huge advantage in the trade market.  On top of that, while we do have obvious needs, we also have a glut of talent in certain areas that we struggle to find ice time for. We are over-stocked on scrappy talented lil-guys, strong defensively sound 3rd liners and shutdown left shot dmen. Whether it's a package or separate deals, idk. But, one of each from Stank/Blake/Nads, Erob/Carrier/KK/Jank, and Walker/Nystrom; throw in some 1st round picks (and frankly any other prospects they want) and we should be able to come out with a 1b to pair with Bussi and either a 2c with size or a 2c and size.   TL/DR We got the money, you got the stuff?

      I don’t  think 6’4 was ever considered small or undersized. Baby hands tho, yes that was his thing That’s an interesting idea, like an optical illusion? Sounds like you have personal experience with this!

      in the 25' draft the Carolina Panthers had hired Brandt Tillis someone who actually understood how to build a successful team & build through the draft .  this team was yes mismanaged for years prior to Brandt Tillis joining the team in 25' & rarely done anything right in the draft outside occaionaly getting lucky on an UDFA such as Jalen Coker who's dad coincidentally happened to be a huge Carolina Panthers fan, hint hint  ...just saying
