The Charlotte Observer reports "there's a strong chance" QB Sam Darnold will be the Panthers' Week 1 starter.

Panthers GM Scott Fitterer called Darnold the favorite for the quarterback job last month.

Out of what we got, he is.  It's his spot to give up to someone else.  I feel very confident in that if he has a strong line of protection he will be much better than before.

Some of his worst throws last year were from a clean pocket.

The QB class is a total crapshoot this year. The smart move is to ride with Darnold and draft a LT.

If Darnold is actually able to perform with some level of consistency and doesn’t turn the ball over then we have a really complete team otherwise.

If he isn’t good then someone will come in and take over a loaded roster and we’ll draft from a better QB class next year.

At least the JR era had sporadic success. Some may not realize it, but the the Tepper era in terms of the W-L percentage is statistically the worst stretch of football in Panthers' history. Worse than Seifert.

Regardless, the PSL owners sold their tickets to the teams with large travelling support.

Always have and, apparently, always will.

I did not know that. I guess the lack of a 1-15 or 2-14 season threw me off the scent

If you want a LT, fine. But don't let it delude you into thinking a shiny new LT might make Darnold salvageable. Were you watching him? Most of his worst decisions come when he actually has the time to survey the field.

I don't know if Darnold can be salvaged but what I do know is that we are stuck paying him 18 million this year with what looks to be a lame duck HC. It doesn't seem so bad to fix the Oline and improve the overall talent of the team while we ride out the last year of Rhule. I personally want us to take Willis. I like his attitude and his top tier arm and athleticism I think he has that "it" factor and if he can be developed, he's going to be special. However, I do understand the argument for just letting this year go and allowing a new staff handpick a QB in what looks to be a loaded class next year.

    • I think he's gone, and rightfully so, if he turns in another losing record. The "talented roster," regardless of how true or not, is a double-edged sword. If the roster is so much improved now from 202X then why are you still producing losing seasons? On one hand, maybe that's what needs to happen. Have the GM hire the new coach, and then have the new coach pick his guy to run his system. That is typically how it works in the NFL. Not the forced inheritance deal we have had in place.
    • Hinging on Brooks to be our spark...be good if it happens... but not holding my breath....RB next draft. Morgan gambled...it would be a 2 year payoff if thing happened.
    • Only way Canales is fired is if we are attrocious everywhere....  defense /special teams and offense..  There are enough "questions" on if BY9 is the guy that ownership wouldn't fire the coach for "just" mid qb play.  Especially with as talented a roster that has played "well enough" to win some tough football games and hang in there against the top tier of the NFL ...(mostly).   Now total team suckage..yeah .. but I don't see that happening.
