Tepper OverRhule’s the HC?

what is the OP even trying to say

people come up with these weird ideals and then work backwards, and they can completely flip depending the context

how does “we’re signing good free agents” even reconcile with “tepper isn’t letting rhule mortgage our future!”

most of these contracts are for one season

The FAs we signed weren’t the traditional “Rhule” guys we signed in the last. OL that can play multiple spots, Temple/Baylor guys etc… We have targeted solid OL and gave them reasonable contacts. This time last year we were bitching about Elf and Erving. Either Rhule is learning or someone else is making these calls.
One year contracts are not a bad thing. It gives us a chance to see if that player can be good in our system then we can negotiate an extension accordingly.

Sheil Kapadia had a similar article analyzing free agency. This was the Panthers section:

The Panthers upgraded their offensive line by signing Bradley Bozeman and Austin Corbett. They signed wide receiver D.J. Moore to a contract extension and brought back corner Donte Jackson. Those moves were all fine. The only problem? The Panthers still don’t have a quarterback solution.

“I think they just tried to change the mix a lot,” Fitzgerald said. “They signed about $36 million a year in contracts. They dumped about $27 million in contracts. So it’s just changing, bringing in a lot of new faces, try to add to that offensive line, stabilize that a little bit, add bits and pieces to the defense. … I have no idea what kind of team they’re really building. The quarterback stuff has really thrown them for a loop.”

The Panthers tried to land Deshaun Watson, but he chose Cleveland. They’ve been in the mix for just about every notable quarterback over the past two years, yet if the season started tomorrow, they’d be starting Sam Darnold.

Taking a quarterback at No. 6 seems like a strong possibility. But rookie QBs generally struggle. Matt Rhule has gone 10-23 in two NFL seasons. If 2022 is more of the same, will he get a fourth season?

The other option for the Panthers would be to add talent in the draft and make a move for Jimmy Garoppolo. That could make them more competitive in the short term and potentially help Rhule’s job security.

NFL offseason brilliant moves, head scratchers and power shifts

(FYI: "Fitzgerald" refers to Jason Fitzgerald OverTheCap.com)

Numerous articles have pointed to the notion that a veteran quarterback acquisition would be more beneficial to Matt Rhule than drafting a rookie.

Joe Person's article from a while back brought up the idea that Scott Fitterer might prefer the rookie route as "the right way" to address the quarterback issue.

So who ultimately wins the debate?

That’s the hope. Hopefully Rhule doesn’t get to trade for a vet and Fitt plus the scouts get to draft one or wait until next year. Hopefully Tepper steps in this time and let’s the right guy make the call for the long term good of the franchise…

I don't know how much has to do with Tepper overruling/stripping power from Rhule, though I do believe that has happened to some degree or another this offseason, but the moves seem more competent and competition-level than his 2020 and 2021 offseasons.

What do you mean bad business decisions?  Tepper's worth has increased by billions, right?  He was at $12B when he bought, now valued at $16B?  Sounds like lots of great decisions for himself.

Team wise?  Well...that poor horse has been beaten to death here...

Not much of that wealth increase is due to the Panthers. If you had disposable wealth at the beginning of this pandemic and you don't have significantly more now, then you missed a LOT of low hanging fruit. There was a huge transfer of wealth as there always is during any sort of economic hiccup.

Yeah, I rank that one right up there with "David Tepper won't accept losing" or "David Tepper won't be denied in his pursuit of Deshaun Watson"  or "David Tepper won a staring contest with the sun" or any of the various other things you can find on DavidTepperFacts.com.

People built up this goofy mythology around him, but the reality doesn't live up to the myth.

I was really hopeful about Tepper in the beginning too. I'm just seeing virtually nothing to cling to in order to keep that hope going at this point. He's brilliant in the world of investing. He seems like a moron in the world of running an NFL football team.

😂 at the premise that Tepper "won't start making bad business decisions now." You have to completely ignore his tenure as the Panthers' owner to still be clinging to that pipedream.

New owners always make bone headed moves to begin with. Let's just hope he learns from this sinking ship.

Matt rhule was never going to try and build a winner with just guys he was familiar with, it is commonplace for new coaches to do this and it always lasts in the range of a season or so.

Ron Rivera brought in guys he was familiar with from San Diego, and like 93% of the Bills roster was at one point former Carolina panthers

the guys you are referring to are interior linemen, they are almost certainly versatile.

one year contracts are not ideal looking for a team looking to build sustained success with quality players, the panthers didn’t sign these proven guys to short term deals because they wanted to evaluate them, and it’s just as easily likely that the short contract came from the players’ camp-an attempt to get a Hassan reddick like contract next season, and much like Reddick, the panthers will likely lose them at the height of their value.

Hopefully it's a learning experience though. Cause this team is still going to barley make 500 this year.

If Darnold is under center we're gonna be lucky to match the five wins of the past three seasons considering we've lost our sack leader and best CB from last year's team.

And then there's this...

Mayfield has to go somewhere. Garropolo, I could see him staying in San Francisco and maybe even being the starter next season. Unless the 49ers got a solid return for Jimmy G I didn't see them trading him with an unproven young QB like Lance behind him.
