So... fix our Jets' trash problem with the Browns' trash? *Panthers' logic*

I think Baker isn’t as much as their “trash” as they had a very rare opportunity to get a top 5 QB. Had the Watson thing never happened they would be rolling with healthy Baker next year and happy about it. I think all but maybe 7/8 teams would want to upgrade with Watson. The Browns were dumb enough to pay that much for him especially with the legal issues. He played hurt and got his feelings hurt which is killing his stock right now. Plus this happened when most teams were set at QB.

Ah, the "let's go ahead and pickup Darnold's extension" mentality.

I'm not sold on a baker trade but man if he comes in and plays well then you can bet, he's going to take Rhule to the cleaners and ask for some ridiculous contract😅. Baker also doesn't seem like the kinda guy to accept the franchise tag either.

Sounds like a decent "problem" to have.

Man it's wild some people still don't get it. The Browns. The. BROWNS. Just gave a quarterback who has been drowning in public turmoil for months the largest guaranteed contract in NFL history to upgrade from Mayfield. How can no one see this is the Sam Darnold storyline all over again? If we do this and it blows up in our faces this franchise will never live it down that we were foolish enough to put all our chips in on the Jets and Browns leftovers in consecutive seasons. Just unbelievable levels of terrible.

Let's for hypothetical reasons we trade for Baker and he put's up something close to his 2020 numbers (30td and 4,000 passing yards) would you be ok with giving him 30-35m a year on his extension. A healthy Baker isn't a bad QB but if he plays well he would absolutely have this organization by the balls in contract negations. If he puts up good numbers then we are probably too far down in the draft to get Bryce young or Cj stroud.

That's what I've been preaching.  You guys are really comfortable giving Baker a 3 year deal with starter money?

I don’t think this will be Sam Darnold level. For one Baker has proven he can play when healthy, which is something Sam never did. It’s also been mentioned that the Browns will pay a portion of his salary. I also don’t think we will trade as high of picks like we did for Sam. If it’s next year’s 3rd/4th and they eat half his salary we should come our way better than we did with the Darnold trade. A better QB for less money/less draft picks. If we grab a LT at 6 he will be (on paper) a solid OL to play behind.
It’s definitely not my first choice, but there are much worse things they can do.

Everytime we shuffle between mediocre QBs we just decrease their already slim chances of becoming more and we lose assets in the process. Stop trying to find a castaway that's going to turn the franchise around in one season and give the ones we've already gambled on an actual shot at succeeding.

If we do that means he played well again and we got a starting QB. If we don’t then we should get a comp pick. We could also tag/trade him to another team if he puts up good numbers. Put it this way, if we acquire him and he plays well we will have several options and be in better shape than we are with $18 million dollar Darnold…

Sam Darnold is never ever going to be part of a trade for Baker Mayfield. it sounds nice but it's not gonna happen.

the Browns are definitely not afraid of Mayfield signing with the Steelers or whatever if they release him. if they were worried about that, they wouldn't have ponied up the assets they did to get Deshaun Watson.

I think it's important to reiterate that Mayfield and Darnold are not on the same level as a QB right now. as meh and as volatile of an asset Mayfield is, he's proven far more in his rocky career than Darnold ever has.

I hate that the Panthers have arrived at a position where this appears to be their best option. just gross. you only get here through a plinko game of bad decisions. and there's no reason to think the bad decisions have stopped by now.

Yeah I was thinking that. Baker would instantly be one of the more talented QBs the Panthers have had. I don’t think we are going to be able to unload Sam and his contract without giving up picks, so I’d just roll with him as the backup (if we acquire Baker). Maybe draft a project like Glass in the late rounds or sign undrafted and cut PJ. Baker with Sam as the backup and Glass as the 3rd/project/practice squad. Who knows maybe Darnold plays well enough to be a decent backup (although very overpriced) behind a better OL.
