Say we roll with Darnold

I think he wants to trade down and draft a QB later. I hope they don't "compromise" and take Pickett #6.

If Fitterer is making the call I doubt it will be Pickett, unless he truly thinks he could be the guy.

My money is on it being someone they didn't even visit or bring in.  I would say that it could possibly apply for the LT as well. That comment Fitts made about how the Wilson selection went down has stuck with me.

If we do roll with Darnold and he drastically improves, it's not going to be a one year wonder. In order to improve, we're going to actually be able to see on film

  • Pre snap reading of defenses will improve
  • Calm footwork after the snap
  • Quick progression through his receivers
  • Willingness to hang in the pocket instead of quick routes
  • Ability to dissect changes in defense week to week

Those are things we don't see right now. If he improves to the point he's asking for a $30 million a year contract, those improvements are going to be crystal clear. If they aren't, let someone else pay the price and enjoy our 3rd round comp, unless we screw that up in FA.

He's gotta understand how extraordinarily rare that situation is. The only reason they got Wilson in the 3rd is because he was sub-6' and that's nowhere near the knock now that it was back then.

I'm not implying they are looking for the next Russell Wilson.  I'm saying that whoever he has as the guy he is high on may not be who everyone is assuming.  I'm betting that decision has already been made and I wouldn't assume anyone based on visits. If I were going to guess I would guess someone with the least amount of Panthers attention.

In Darnold's defense I do think he would be marginally better if given more protection.  I dont think it would be a cure all though.  Those aren't ghosts he is seeing.  Those are demons and Rhule aint a priest.

Oddly enough, he looked the worst last year when he actually had time. He's at his best when his first read is open or immediate pressure forces him to immediately hit his check down option. When he has time to actually survey the field he usually makes a bad decision. When he has time then gets pressured late when holding the ball too long... oh lord. That's when classic Darnold disasters happen.

He's just not a QB. No OL is going to magically turn him into a QB. Y'all just gotta accept that.

I think that's because he's never had it and it freaks him out. I think that any promise he had was beat out of a long time ago.

I think you could've stopped there. You're right. He never had "it". He's just not a QB. He's a talented thrower of the football. He had plenty of time behind a good OL at USC and the turnover issues were still present.

I'm not going to say the guy doesn't have the talent.  He just can't get out of his own head. He never was going to make it in the NFL.

I know most of you, including myself, want a new QB.

What if we decide to take an OT at 6 and don't pull the trigger on Jimmy G or Baker.   We go into the season with Sam Darnold as our starting QB.

Our line is going to be much much better with the players we have now compared to last season and they are under new management from Campen.  We have the weapons to make some noise offensively.

What do we do if Sam has a good year?  What if McAdoo gets out of him what Brady couldn't?

Say we make the playoffs as a wild card team and we are picking in the bottom half of the 2023 draft.

Do you resign Darnold or let him walk and get the compensation pick for him.  Do we resign him for a mid-level QB contract.  Do we target a free agent QB?

If Darnold plays well this forum is going to have a field day on what to do next year.  We'd be out of the top 10 in the draft.  Probably too far down to get a 2023 rookie.

Thoughts?

There are a lot of variables.    Sam is gone after this year.  He has to play like someone completely different for us to keep him.  He showed last year, that his play at the jets, was his play.

In the draft, a good QB can drop, there can be a deep qb class, we can trade up.  If we build our line we have a better shot at a free agent.   A large percentage of the playoff teams acquired their QB by means other than top 5 of the draft.
