The Drew Brees that kept Philip Rivers on the bench was hardly "hall of famer" Drew Brees. He was dumped by the Chargers not long after.

And again, a lot of guys who do end up starting don't do so because it's in the plans. Heck, look at Brady.

As I've said all along, either strategy can work. What the smart guys do isn't limited to one approach. They evaluate the situation.

The bad, dumb or desperate teams always want the rookie to start whether it's best or not.

He was dumped because he was a middling player but mainly because he had what most of the NFL believed was a career ending injury.

Also, the "sit 'em" strategy is largely a relic from the "three yards and a cloud of dust" NFL era. Smart coaches play their best players. They don't sit them for some oddball idea that this is something that works.

We aren't going to agree on this because we don't look at player development the same way. I am a firm believer that great players largely become great on their own accord and you believe success is largely tied to a franchise developing the player.

Those are countering opinions, so there isn't much we can do to come to an agreement on that.

I'm not necessarily a fan of Baker if we're talking long-term nor if it costs us any significant assets.

However, Baker in '22 with the chip on his shoulder, in a walk-year, with the current QB room, is a pretty solid move. Is it a "great" move or a "no-brainer".... no.

A one-year rental at our weakest position with something to prove...... yes, please. Baker > Sam. Let Corral sit for a year and learn.

I see the modern drive to start guys immediately as one of the reasons people were talking about a "quarterback crisis" not too long ago.

It's gotten a little better, but NFL quarterback is still the most complicated position in sports. More than one team that drafted an athlete and expected them to skate by on those skills until they learned the position has found that approach lacking.

I believe coaching matters, including bad coaching.

CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones reports there's "urgency on Carolina's side" to trade for Baker Mayfield soon.

The sticking point in the trade talks, per Jones, is Mayfield's salary and how much of it the Browns will eat to get him out of Cleveland. The Panthers would like to get Mayfield acclimated with the team's offensive system during minicamps, well before the crunch time of training camp. Mayfield would be a clear upgrade over Sam Darnold, who was miserable as Carolina's starter in 2021. Despite a poor, injury-marred 2021 campaign, Mayfield's 2020 season showed he can be a passable game manager in the NFL. Everyone in the Carolina offense, especially D.J. Moore and Robbie Anderson, would get a fantasy bump with Mayfield under center in 2022.

No.

Oh, I'd say when it comes to developing quarterbacks in the nfl, there's a lot of "stupid", with equal amounts of "impatient" and the occasional "desperate" sprinkled in for good measure.

Factor in also that some of those early starts weren't the original plan. Both Justin Herbert and Davis Mills were supposed to sit behind Tyrod Taylor but he got injured both years. Likewise, Russell Wilson was expected to learn behind the great Matt Flynn but it didn't work out.

Anthony Lynn's dumbass had no intention of playing Justin Herbert. It literally took a botched pain killer injection to get him on the field. Just insane to think about.

What gets me about Cleveland is they are putting the team in a position where they are going to have to eat the entire 18.9 million.  They could save 5 million and get a low round pick if they would accept the Carolina's terms.

I guess they think we are desperate enough to take on more than we want to.

I say we hold out until he's released.

To your point, outside of the money issue, Mayfield could come in and show the league he's a starting caliber QB and will get a good deal somewhere.   Corral isn't forced into playing and Darnold can carry the clipboard.

To me it is a no brainer providing we don't give in and pay more than we initially offered.

Hearing from a guy that knows a guy that says the Baker deal might be done by Friday.

At least that's the buzz around Tepper Sports

I've fully expected this to get done for awhile now. Of the available (bad) options, Mayfield would be my preference. I just hope we don't get hosed. The last time we were bidding against ourselves the Jets pretty much took us to the woodshed.

    • Why do you and the other Australian guy feel the need to moderate every thread about our starting QB?
    • I'm talking about on any team. I keep hearing that but have yet to see an example. The last high flying offense I've seen was the Rams "Greatest Show on Turf". Since then it's been just average for passing offenses across the league.
