Rhule "warming to" starting Darnold?

Behind a very good line Darnold will be a much better QB.

Statistically, he hasn’t been a better a QB when protection holds up.

I keep going back to the Simms breakdown last year.   Sam just messes plays up.  Protection can be there.  Playcall is there.  Sam is late on the read and fugs the play up.  He just doesn’t have it between the ears.   As soon as he isn’t asked to check down to first read, bad Sam is inevitable.

I have my doubts about that. Statistically he has struggled the most with a clean pocket.

True.  Most of us agree though that he was better the first three games before  CMC, OL injuries and the loss of Arnold.  He's not statistically good in a clean pocket, but his overall play is better when he's not running for his life 1 sec after the snap.  He is also better when we have a run game, which evaporated last year.   Sam will look better with a healthy line and run game.  Hopefully Robbie has exercised his demons, we'll see more of Tremble, and TMJ will take a step up.

Last year he was worse when he had time. I don’t understand you people who think all Darnold needs is a good line to be a good QB. If he was a good QB he could rise above a bad o-line. He hasn’t. A good line isn’t gonna make him a good QB.

A lot of those first three games was smoke and mirrors, TBH. It didn't take long for opponents to figure out what we were doing and proceed to dominate us for almost the entire remainder of the season.

Sam starting would be a disaster for us(the fans) because the chances of winning consistently will likely be small.

But, on the positive side, Rhule should be shown the door relatively quickly in the offseason. Well.....I hope. If we have another disaster season and we keep Rhule.....it's time to start protesting at the stadium.

Everyone knows the best football is played early in the year duh. Also against bad and crippled teams.

I don't think we will have to wait long. Then again they can beg Cam to come back to distract us again...

    • We need a Sam Off Ball Backer to pair with Lloyd. Lloyd is a strong Interior Will especially in Pass Coverage- but that is also Trevin Wallace’s archetype. Need a Rozeboom style run stopper. Rodriguez and Allen fit that
    • There aren’t that many ways to screw Day 2 up.  That’d be them making an obvious reach, or selecting at one of the few positions that we are pretty solid at. Because as excited as we are for the growth and improvement this team is showing, it’s still not an overly talented or deep roster. Honestly, there aren’t really many positions I’d feel bad about. Feelings about Bryce aside (because we are not going to select a QB), it’s really RB (bad positional value) and that’s it. I guess OT too since we grabbed Freeling in Round 1.    While not as high on my wish list as other spots, you can justify WR or TE.     Interior offensive lineman who would likely take over an interior spot either this year (at center) or guard (next for cap casualty of Hunt or Lewis)? Fine by me.   Dlineman? Yes, that’s a highly rotational position and we have zero quality depth.    ILB? Yep, could stand for an upgrade over Wallace.    EDGE? Absolutely wouldn’t hate another option to spell Phillips, Scourton, and Princely.    FS?  Would love to add better coverage skill set to the backend of the defense. Moehrig and Ransom are great in run support but not as good deep. Adding a more traditional FS would allow us to mix and match/run some 3 safety sub packages and or a big nickel type look with a SS down near the line for better run support in possible pass downs.    CB? Could stand to get better at nickel.
    • Sounds like Veesaar is entering the draft. He could always test the waters and pull out and return but without him our big men look like a serious liability. Better do something in the portal. If they don't do something about this portal madness my days as a college sports fan are probably numbered. This bullshit of having a nearly entirely new team every season is gonna get old fast.
