NFL Network analyst suggests Rhule needs Mayfield to save his job

SMH. BC played half the season. Brown was an out of shape project. Not even in the same world. Brown had no business being drafted let alone us stupidly taking him over Trey Smith. Amazing that we act like Brown was even close to starting at the NFL level. From reports, he still seems out of shape.

BC appears to be developing but 😂 at a 3rd round pick starting 6 games and playing half the snaps being a coach holding back a rookie. Moton played barely at all with Matt Kalil at LT and was a 2nd rounder. That’s a better example of a coach holding back a rookie.

@Pakmeng  Is correct, Brady was settling at LT when he finally got a chance to play.

Brown was out of shape "according to Rhule's standards" but shouldn't have kept him off the field to show what he could do.  You or anyone else is not going to convince me that Brown could have done any worse that the turnstiles that were on the field.

Don't be surprised to see Brown in the mix with Campen at the helm of our O-line.

People just repeat this line because other people say it. No research and don't even watch the games apparently.

Brady finished essentially the final third of the season as a starter.

I wish he played more but the line of "he barely played" is pure fiction

Rhule needs to get off his mid round rookies don't play fetish and start the best talent on the field.

These analysts are really on top of things with the fresh ideas.

Weren't we also just told it was Rhule who didn't want to trade for Mayfield?

No, we weren't. A huddler speculated on it but there was no source.

And Jones isn't saying anything about whether Rhule (or anyone else) wants to trade for Mayfield or not anyway. He's saying that he needs to trade for him if he wants to save his job.

Reading comprehension isn't really your thing, is it? But hey, I guess you don't need to actually understand something to criticize it. That's always been your MO.

Rhule’s best option is success from Corral not Mayfield getting us to .500. You can just show improvement if you feel like Corral is in fact the answer. I see no situation (realistic) where Darnold or Mayfield play well enough to get an extension and Rhule coaching beyond this year so it seems like self preservation is letting Darnold get hit around as the line gels and Corral is getting ready enough to start. We could finish 5-12 again and have an optimistic future. Let’s say Darnold Darnolds and we start 0-5. If Corral takes over and we go 5-7 but show sparks and lose a few of those as close games, we’d probably feel good. Feel like we can plug a few hole maybe draft a JaMarr Chase and be in business.

Problem is the schedule isn't set up that way.  Like last season, the first few games are some of the most winnable of the season.  The back half of the schedule is brutal.

100%

He's why I think we should start Corral.

1. He'll have a decent line to play behind.  He won't have to deal with a David Carr line. (worst than ours was last year)

2.  Quick release and he'll get the ball out quickly into playmakers hands.  He doesn't have to carry the team on his shoulders.

3. His mobility is an exciting trait and if he learns to slide when necessary he'll get fans in the seats.

4, Most importantly, his leadership.  He has that knack to get players behind him.  Darnold doesn't have it, Bridgewater doesn't have it and it's going to take alot for Mayfield to get it with this team.  There is something special about his leadership skills.  Jake had it and Corral is much more talented than Jake.

From the article:

Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule will be looking for employment if he allows Sam Darnold to quarterback the team this year, says at least one NFL analyst.

That was the sentiment that NFL Total Access’ James Jones recently delivered when asked about the potential to acquire Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield.

“I don’t care about the money. You have to go get Baker Mayfield. If you do not win in this league as a head coach, you get fired. If you do not have a good quarterback in this league, you cannot win, that’s been proven. We’ve seen this year after year after year,” said Jones, a former Super Bowl-winning wide receiver who caught an NFL-leading 14 touchdown passes in 2012.

“Baker Mayfield right now coming off the streets, wherever he’s at in Cleveland, makes this team better. He is a better player and a better quarterback. We’ve seen the best of Sam Darnold, we can’t keep giving Darnold more chances. Baker Mayfield led this Cleveland Browns team to the playoffs and won on the road in Pittsburgh... If you do not bring in a quarterback you are going to end up being fired depending on Sam Darnold,” said Jones.

He said this clearly based on nothing

Jake was a seasoned veteran.  Corral, despite his potential is a rookie QB.  Rookie QBs struggle, period.  Sure, there a few outliers, but as a general rule of thumb, it's usually a rough road for them.

This ALL boils down to how comfortable Rhule will be with another losing season.  I have zero argument about the long-term trajectory for this team and how we should handle the QB situation.  That's being practical, but again, will Rhule be practical given another losing season is staring him right in the face with Darnold/Corral as QB1 and QB2?

No. It's his own speculation.

Question is though, do you believe that Rhule can do enough to justify staying by starting Sam Darnold or Matt Corral?

Anyone who is being honest with themselves has to admit, "no".

    • Agree on Necas, he’s gone. Guentzel seems 50-50 to me, Canes would have to pony up. Still not sure Skjei will be back. From exit interviews he seemed less optimistic than Pesce and I definitely don’t think Pesce is back. Jarvis and Noesen have to be back. I think if Kuzy shoots more he could be a great asset. Put him with a passer like Turbo and a net front like Noesen.
