Simms is right on the money re the competition

I know that many are complaining about the reps, but Simms says there are enough reps to go around. He and Florio of course, just like everyone else at this point, believe Baker should come out victorious, but Simms said that this wasn't ever a situation where Mayfield would just be handed the job.  

 

Though Darnold has been rightly given the benefit of doubt because of the sucky teams that he has played for, including the disaster of an offense that we had last season, which Simms references, this is likely his swan song as a full-time starter. Just be patient. I think that some people are kinda freaking out (or just being critical because it's en vogue) for little reason. I tend to take Simms' word on it, as he was an actual pro QB.

Simms cites Darnold as knowing the offense better, when in truth the only advantage Darnold has is the two weeks from OTAs. That's not enough to gain any serious leverage.

And while Simms may indeed be a "professional quarterback", there are plenty of other professional football people who disagree.

All he has to be is significantly better than Darnold.

I seriously doubt anybody would argue that's not true.

This facade will be over with soon enough.  Camp reps don't bother me as much as, obviously, a bunch other people.  The cream is rising to the top day by day.  A good performance on Saturday and then put a bowtie on it during patriots week and call it a day.

The literal point of these shows is to argue different positions.   Whether they always believe them or not. 

and yeah, it basically is Simms acknowledging  what everyone else knows.  Baker is better and should start.  Forced to argue the counter point of why he doesn’t have the job right now.   

Baker not being elite is also irrelevant.  He should be given the job because he is clearly better.  A high end backup is better than Sam. An average starter is a no brainer over Sam.

Nah, fam. Darnold has gotten too many chances and has played like ass. Even when he has had protection, PROPER protection. Honestly tired of guys like him getting all the chances in the world and people like Cam getting the short end of the stick. This is BAKER's job. Point. Blank. Period.

I bet they hardly play if at all this weekend.  

he will probably say he didn’t want to put them out there with all second string.   Because who wants the actual starting lineup playing through a fake competition for 2 different QBs in the first preseason game.

No, he has all the weeks since OTAs.

I bet both qbs play this weekend and let's see how they do. I can't imagine we won't play Baker and Darnold given the supposed competition.

Would Darnold not have had the playbook that whole time though? He participated in OTAs and had over a month head start on studying the playbook. I'd say he should've had a leg up on knowing the offense better. And whether that's the case or not, those aren't "facts" that Simms can be wrong on. It's subjective and none of us have any idea how well either of those guys know the offense.

It's just a dishonest competition.  They'd rather come across as a prove it culture than give adequate leverage to the guy who's obviously going to start.  This staff continues to be their own worst enemy.

that’s means you have to play the starters the entire time Sam and Baker would be competing? Who wants that?  It would double up the time you play our starters in a meaningless preseason game 1.    It’s not a comp if one is with the 1s and one is with the 2s the next series.
