If he were to be shopped this off-season , would you pick up the phone?

I really like him and wish he were in a better situation.

I don't want a retread except maybe as a bridge to developing a draft pick. He'd be my favorite among them.

I don't want us to pick him up with the idea he's our long term starter. But if we were going to go that route again, he'd be one of just a couple I'd be somewhat ok with

I can agree with this thinking. I wouldn’t call him a retread though, because no one has given up on Carr, maybe they have given up on the franchise. He is a great player stuck in a poo situation. Put him on another team in the NFC South and they are #1 in the division.

Derek Carr represents the QB curve in the league perfectly.

He’s what you want at minimum. You want at the very least a Carr. If you don’t have a young guy you’re testing out in his first year or so, then the guy you have better be Derek Carr or better. If not, keep shopping.

Yeah, he's not in the same category of Baker or Sammy. He's not a failed project. He's a good QB with a good head on his shoulders and a good leader on a consistently bad team with a horrible culture.

This is an interesting question.  To answer Mr. Scott's point, I think Carr is a credibly proven commodity. The fan who can't see that and compares him to Mayfield and Darnold is the kind of fan who is going to kneejerk no matter what you do, so you don't worry about him. If Carr comes here and starts winning, everyone shuts up.

What concerns me looking at his numbers is that he appears to have peaked two years ago and looks to be on the decline. Not massively on the decline, but he is 9 years in, and you can't blame his decline on the organization suddenly becoming poo. He's been with the Raiders his whole career and they are who they are.

I'm inclined to think his contract is more of a plus than a minus. After two years, the cap hit you take if you need to cut him is peanuts for cutting a QB, or really any highly paid starter. Meanwhile, he's signed for the next 3 years at what will doubtlessly look like a reasonable rate after yet another round of nosebleed inducing signings this offseason. Is he anywhere near as cheap as a drafted QB on a rookie deal? Of course not, but any such rookie is a crap shoot, Carr is not.

I think I'd be inclined to at least listen, but much would depend on my evaluation of this year's crop of draftable qb's, and also what the Raiders want for him. Likely I'd pass, but the question was, do you pick up the phone?

I'd at least pick up the phone.

He might be that, and I think most would agree he's better than Darnold or Mayfield.

But then how do you sell going that route to the fans of the team that already went after Darnold and Mayfield? 😕

Or he isn’t and we go through another “this QB is better than the QB we have” merry go round.
Bridgewater sucks, Darnold is better.

Darnold sucks, Mayfield is better.

Mayfield sucks, Carr is better.

I am starting to see a trend.

At this point I am tired of getting other teams cast off QBs.
We either need to go with Corral, who likely will suck but who knows, or we go get a QB no matter our draft position. Could probably package a lot of our 2023 draft picks to move up this year if we wanted.

This roster is a plug and play QB away from competing. Adding Carr for a couple of mid

rounders and then beefing up the roster with the rest of the picks is a pretty appetizing scenario.

raiders would be dumb to trade him, but him

in black and blue and even more young studs around him… that sounds like an intriguing scenario.

You couldn’t get him last year for less than the Stafford deal. So….yeah I would trade for him on a discounted price bc the Raiders suck. Use the 1st this year to take Anderson and a 2nd to take Carr. Hire a great offensive HC to run it (Payton).

No thanks. I would rather go with a young guy who gets to play. Just getting into the playoffs seems like a low bar to be aiming for, Carr doesn't look clutch in those situations. Draft a rookie and play a FA vet if that fails and do it again if needed.

If the roster is that close then do it right and use that window of cheap play from a rookie contract. If the next crew can't draft well then them being here longer wouldn't be a positive. Lets see what they can do and rip off the bandaid if they stink also.

I think I could be on board with trading for him as our bridge with the notion we do not intend to resign him.  Carr as a middle of the road QB only brings you playoff success if surrounded by an above average roster, and I don't think we can credibly say our roster is that yet. We have a strong Oline and a secondary that shows promise, no other position group can be labeled standout. Carr gets us to a better place than we are now, but that's an absurdly low bar atm.

I was talking playoffs and not regular season. Context. As stated he has slipped recently. If we were getting Carr from years ago I would have said differently.
