Yes but was he a short order cook that is the important question. We better not go after these coaches no one has ever heard of.

Yeah Tepper needs to go on Undercover Boss-Panthers edition before he starts rationalizing any more staffing hires based on irrelevant things he personally can relate to.

Isn't Belichick's son also involved in the defense there. Might not want to officially make him an underling.  Yea, I agree...dumb.

I'm not put off my J.Mayo at all. I kinda like what Dan Campbell has done out there in Detroit. Former players that can be good coaches seem to have a certain "it" factor. If Mayo can lead like Campbell and assemble a good stuff, I'm all aboard. I think people get too stuck on offensive coach vs defensive. You need the right coach, McDermott is a great example of this. That offense functions and he is smart enough to know to not go the conservative route. I think recent former players understand the new NFL better anyways, they played it. They know conservative O and calls don't win games anymore.

Unfortunately, I've heard similar things said about other coaches from The Belichick tree.

The ones who leave that nest just never seem to accomplish anything away from it.

I do think Mayo could break the mold and would be an intriguing HC candidate. I don't think he's a serious contender for the Panthers job, but anecdotally it seems like recent ex-LBs have made for some pretty good coaching candidates (Vrabel, Ryans).

I would think this is more like a Vrabel then a Patricia/McDaniels. High level former player I think makes a big difference. Those guys were leaders on the field too. It makes a difference if you can translate that to coaching.

Why is several media people all of a sudden concentrating on the LB coach of the Patriots for HC that no one has ever heard of and he is acting like he is an emerging potential top choice. 
All indications is Tepper wants a OC as coach and the only DC I would accept is Ryan’s. 
Also when has a Patriots coach ever made a good HC?

      My long and rambling post:   The guy is all heart, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back even better next year. He’s exactly the guy you lock up. The money won’t ever change the way he plays.  It was a big fumble, but what 1,000 yard back fumbles once in an entire season?  Pride. This team is FINALLY seeing guys who obviously take the game very seriously. Hunt, Chuba, Thielen, Brown, Horn (CB), Coker, Bryce (IMHO). Bye bye, Spider-Man. I don’t see these dudes being OK with teammates half-assing practice or in games. I can see Brown and Horn coming over to talk to somebody.  Good team? Ummm, maybe, but will still likely lose more close games than they win unless this last draft turns in to LOB part 2. That’s a stretch.  Pretty good/decent team. Yes. They finished the season as a pretty good team. I know I sound like a broken record harping back to it, but going in to ATL and putting a 40 burger on them en route to an OT win. A bad Panthers team would have had their brakes beaten off. We’ve seen it.  Rose colored glasses on and bonging a 40 of hopium: There are watershed moments that occur that change the course of franchises, both good and bad. If Fox doesn’t pull Rodney at halftime, the epic journey that was 2003 never happens. On the negative side, Cam taking that one hit from Watt was the end of any and all Panthers relevancy and we’ve been the biggest losers in all of pro sports as a result. Watershed moments. LOB draft. Vinny goes down and the goat is born.  Will the ATL game be the spark that this franchise has desperately needed? Could it be that they hit the mega million jackpot with Princley and Scourton as eat QBs for breakfast? Sure would be nice having 2 all-pro edge guys on the cheap for the next 4 years.  A lot of unknowns, but at least it actually feels  fun again.

      Ok LT and Petersen are a cut above everyone else to me cmc and Faulk are interchangeable on this list.  though Faulk was better career wise
