Reich interview w/ Balboni

He has a strong connection to charlotte and hopefully will be a good head coach if he can come out of the chute with a good offense and win. Wilks showed us our roster is better than we performed under rhule so expectations should be pretty high. Wilks with half a staff and a revolving door of quarterbacks went 6-6. I would think with his QB of choice, a good offensive scheme Reich should do even better. He has no reason to regress.

Panthers also had the 27th hardest schedule in 2023.    Wilks played some very basic football down the stretch.  Roster still has a lot of issues.   They just aren't as evident against bad teams paired w/ solid coaching (Wilks).

Serious where are all these roster issues outside of a handful of additions we will make this year.  We will add a legitimate tight end and a QB or two on offense. Defense needs another shut down corner, another linebacker,  and a great DE across from Burns. Otherwise we have solid players in many spots. There is no reason for us to go backwards from .500 next year. Imagine what everyone would say if Wilks had been named and we regressed next year. But somehow Reich shouldn't be judged by the same standard.

I mean, you just listed a bunch of holes right there.   Saying we will just fill them doesn't mean it is that easy.   Just start with offense.

QB is a massive hole.  The entire QB depth chart.

We still have holes in our receiving game at WR and TE.

We have a 27 year old journey man RB and our run game completely was nonexistent vs teams that could play the run down the stretch.  Seems like a pretty big red flag going up.

We got DB holes.

We got LB holes

We got DE/pass rush holes.

Which is why when we stepped on the field vs a really good team like the Bengals down the stretch.  It was non-competitive from the start.

The narrative that this is now basically a win now team handed to Frank doesn't fly for me.  Our schedule being so weak had a lot to do with us making it to 7 wins.

Every year you don't know how weak or strong teams will be so schedules make for great excuses but usually only after the fact. The truth is that there are guys we are developing in all those holes who like Luvu could have a break out year with proper coaching. But let's look at quarterback. Darnold went 4-2 off the bench with McAdoo. If Reich is the QB guru folks say then there is your project. Corral by some was considered the best QB in the draft last year. Certainly better than Purdy who Shanahan showed with a solid scheme and good players around him can be solid even as a rookie. If you don't ask too much. And the mark of a good coach is to adapt the scheme to what we have and bring out the best in people doing more than they think they can.  Wilks did. Why can't Reich??

The only one I would say really fits that mold of the top 4 qbs is Young.  Accuracy and decision making are literally the main weaknesses of the next 3 prospects.

Honestly, when I heard him list those things out, Max Duggan came to mind. It’ll be interesting to see where he falls in the pre-draft process

Also curious where he sees Corral fit in. Corral has a lot of those same qualities as well

This roster is still subpar. We’ll have to make some moves to win in 2023

They've already interviewed a bunch of coordinator candidates from the way it seems and other candidates we don't even know about that weren't announced publicly. Surprised the Panthers were that diligent interviewing assistants before the head coach was even hired. Does make me wonder if Reich was the guy all along....

They hired his daughter early this month so I would say yea he was the guy all along. They just drug the interview process along when they knew Wilks didn't have a chance

I agree you don't know what you SOS will be heading into any season.  But we know what it was. We know what it was for the 2022 Panthers.  Weak and easy.   And Wilks went .500 with that.

Wilks did adapt from what Rhule did.  And it allowed us to be competitive w/ a weak schedule.

But we couldn't run the ball worth a poo vs good run defenses.   Good overall teams easily handled the Wilks' Panthers.  Wilks selective did what you are praising him on.   Opponent is relevant.

I'm sure Frank would love to have CMC to make his life easy on a QB like Purdy.  A Deboo would be even more icing on the cake.  And a Kittle.   49ers have probably the 2 best overall backfield/receiving threats in the entire NFL in CMC/Deboo.  Plus a top 3 TE.  It's not just scheme and coaching for why Purdy is working out right now.    The talent around the QB is on a different planet in SF right now to deal with inexperienced QB play.  Take away CMC/Deboo/Kittle and give Shanahan Foreman, Moore, Thomas.....and Purdy most likely isn't being celebrated to the extent he is.

And we don't expect Reich to do as well as San Fran. But we should have a better qb than Purdy who was a 7th rounder which means we don't need pro bowlers to succeed. Again we went 6-6 and was a missed field goal from 7-5. Now all of a sudden we don't have talent and have all these holes. Talk about settling for mediocre. Reich is fine if we regress from 500 but who would be giving Wilks the same grace. i can't believe people can't see the hypocrisy.

Again, we went .500 with one of the weakest schedules in the league.   If it wasn’t so weak, Wilks doesn’t go .500 most likely with the talent we had.   Because we had holes that weren’t as glaring vs the weak opponents.

you can’t ignore who Wilks could and couldn’t beat.   And what we could and couldn’t do based on opponent.

my issue is simply claiming a HC should win next year.   If we have a tough schedule, this roster has too many holes IMO.  For Wilks or Frank to be expected to win and rioting if we don’t? I would expect either to compete to be around .500 next year.  Give or take.  That’s not how I define winning though.

Roster isn’t build to actually compete yet to do something that matters.  Frank isn’t inheriting that type roster.  Guess we will see what they do in the off-season to change that
