Question? Lamar Jackson Franchise Tag

What Is the Difference Between an Exclusive and Non-Exclusive Franchise Tag?

The most common type of franchise tag is the non-exclusive one, which means that NFL players can still negotiate with other teams following the application of the tag. Meanwhile, the exclusive franchise tag prevents players from negotiating with other teams.

If the negotiations on a non-exclusive tag lead to a contract offer, then the team applying the franchise tag would have a first right of refusal in terms of matching the offer. If the team applying the tag declines to match the offer sheet, the team proposing the offer would send two first-round NFL draft picks in return for signing the player.

If the Raven franchise tag him and we offer a contract and he accepts and they don’t match…. we only owe them 2 firsts picks? I mean the contract would be crazy but 2 first isn’t bad for a MVP.

1. He’d cost as many draft picks as it would to move to 1 in the draft.

2. Would cost so much $$ it would handicap the roster to where we wouldn’t even be able to extend Burns or resign Bozeman

For a good QB, but a QB that’s been as injury prone as CMC.

Lamar in Atlanta scares me.

I feel like they will be his top suitor if he becomes available.

I'm OK with it. His contract is going to make it hard to assemble a solid roster over time. Franchise FA QB is great and all but one player taking up 50m in cap space a year is going to make them rely on a lot of rookie or lower tier FAs contracts to fill the gap.

QB contracts are only going to get bigger. Cap Space is not a thing.

Saints been signing players for years with no cap space.

I think at some point we're going to see the QB contracts hit a wall, much like the rookie contract cap. 50m a year fully guaranteed contracts aren't going to be sustainable to be competitive long term.

I mean, I just disagree. You're going to have to pay to play. You think Buffalo, Cincy, Los Angeles is NOT going to pay their guys? They ARE going to pay, just like KC did with Mahomes. The salary cap is going no where but up, every year. Big contracts to QBs, if you have one that's worth a damn, is going to be the norm. You sign them while you can, and as time goes on, their cap hit becomes less of an issue.

If it's not Jackson, it's going to be somebody that we draft (if we're lucky). Let Hurts win today, and he's going to get paid too. That's just how it is. All  the talk of being cash strapped and hamstrung is way overblown. You get your guy and manage your roster. I don't care if it's in the draft or by acquisition.

NFL brand grows each year. Prices go up.

This is history look at how QB's got paid back in the 80's compared to the QB's of today.

Contracts only increase with each passing year. There is going to be a time when QB's are making 100 mil a year. Probably not in our lifetime though.lol

When the cap began in 1994, SB winning QB Steve Young was 11% of his teams salary cap. At 45m per season, Lamar would be 20% of his teams salary cap. You can't keep increasing the % a QB gets and expect to field a team that is competitive. Doesn't matter if you have a billion dollar QB if you can't afford to block for him or have someone for him throw to.

Don't get mad at me get mad at the cap increasing every year.

Why are you so concerned about what players are making?

LOL at me being mad. You obviously don't understand that increasing the cap doesn't increase the % available to pay players. 53 players have to be paid. One player taking a huge portion of that % limits the ability of the team to build around them.

    • Don't have to be miss cleo. His weakness are length, athleticism, creating his own shot, defense, finishing at the rim,  Strengths - shooting and IQ.   Likely won't work as non athletic shooters don't typically work.

    • I live in Indiana and took a trip that weekend to watch my two friend's teams play (Chiefs and Vikings) IN Minnesota when they were playing at a college field, I think TCF? Anyways, our plan was to watch the game (noon game) then do some shopping at the Mall of America, I wasn't planning on watching the Panthers play Seattle since I was out sight seeing and walking around after the noon game had ended. By the time we were walking back into the Mall the Panthers were down by 2 scores in the 4th or going into the 4th and we were all thirsty from walking around for 2.5 hours after the Vikings game so we decided to postpone shopping until after we ate. We found this nice little sports bar inside the mall that had the game on. Man, I'm so glad we skipped shopping because that was probably the most excited I've been in some time for a win. Beating Seattle in 2015 felt like the "monkey off the back" sort of feeling and I knew we had finally arrived as a team. The entire bar erupted when Cam hit Olsen for that walk off TD. Literally one of the greatest moments of my life. My friend wasn't so happy though lol, by the time the Panthers game ended ALL of the stores inside the mall had closed and he wasn't able to get any souvenirs. It was his first time watching a Vikings game live and making a trip like that so he was legit upset lol. I on the other hand couldn't have been happier.
