Panthers met with Hooker per report

Arm strength, core strength, speed, and potential (AR is 4 years younger with only one season as a starter).  Hooker also played in a very QB friendly system at UT with a couple NFL WRs around him. In 2020 Hooker was 98/150 with 1339 yards 9 TDs and 5 INTs at VT in a more pro offense against ACC defenses. He did have 620 more rushing yards and 9 TDs while still being older than current AR.  I'm not saying Hooker is bad, just SOME scouts are going to see AR as the next Josh Allen (potentially) with his size, speed, and arm strength.  His ceiling is through the roof, but there is a definite high bust factor in there as well.

From comments I'm hearing, it does sound like AR would require a bridge QB. Queue the incoming complaints from the people wanting a top QB and no free agent "retread". Some people can't be pleased.

Hooker would fit what Reich looks for in a QB in his system.

C.J. Stroud, Hooker, Tanner McKee in that order

PFF's QB rankings  https://www.pff.com/news/draft-2023-nfl-draft-position-rankings-quarterback

1. BRYCE YOUNG, ALABAMA

BIG BOARD RANK: 1

An offensive coordinator will have to do some things to scheme around Young's height, but it's a small price to pay for everything else he brings to the table.

2. WILL LEVIS, KENTUCKY

BIG BOARD RANK: 4

Levis' tape has so much to like from a tools and NFL-readiness standpoint, but his accuracy — or lack thereof — is borderline untenable at this point.

3. C.J. STROUD, OHIO STATE

BIG BOARD RANK: 5

As a passer, Stroud is nothing like the other two first-round quarterbacks who came out of Ohio State before him. And that bodes well for his NFL prospects.

4. ANTHONY RICHARDSON, FLORIDA

BIG BOARD RANK: 11

High-end play wins Super Bowls, and no one has a higher end in this class than Richardson. Now, what are the chances he reaches that or even comes close?

5. TANNER MCKEE, STANFORD

BIG BOARD RANK: 29

McKee ticks a lot of boxes, and there's good reason to believe he'll be even better in the NFL than he was in college.

6. HENDON HOOKER, TENNESSEE

BIG BOARD RANK: 94

Hooker's age, injury and offense give him a unique prospect profile that is truly unprecedented. That being said, it's very easy to still buy into his tools and progression.

that’s why I don’t understand why people are so high on Levis. Accuracy is kind of important and hard to improve. And I don’t mean “completion %”, that’s fake accuracy. Levis doesn’t have good placement and throws it all over the place sometimes. But hey, hopefully one of those top few teams feels otherwise and drafts Levis high. “Tools” don’t take you very far if you don’t know how to use them.

depends on how the team wants to develop them.  I am sure each staff probably has a different plan as each kid is unique.  I wouldnt throw any of them into the fire from the jump

Thinking about it from a team-building view, I think a very good strategy would consist of:

1) Bring in a rookie QB and develop for a year

2) Sign a bridge free agent to a 2-3 year contract

Assuming great coaching and solid roster, a free agent QB could significantly boost their market value in a one-year showcase year. You then trade that QB for draft compensation and you start that second-year QB. You then get three years of a rookie contract plus the one-year extension, which is huge for salary cap purposes.

The WR class this year is really weak and we can fill the DE in free agency.
If we are gonna take a risk on a player and not move up then it makes more sense to get Richardson at 9.

No, it doesn't. Taking Richardson with so little experience and rough performance based purely on speculated potential is well, just a bad idea.

NFL SCOUTING REPORT: SUMMARY

Hooker is a quality prospect who has faced adversity during his college career but now seems in an ideal place to take the next step and really get the attention of NFL scouts. He possesses excellent athletic talent, has a strong arm, huge hands, and has the power to make all the requisite throws at the next level, he also is a decent runner who is always a threat on the move. However, Hooker is still a little raw as a player and needs to demonstrate he can become a more consistently nuanced player.

Hooker was putting up good numbers prior to his ACL injury and finished the season with an impressive 123.9 NFL QB rating. Was outstanding in a 5 TD performance against Alabama although ran into a brick wall a few weeks later against Georgia.

We expect Hooker to be a very solid draft prospect assuming he recovers from his torn ACL and has all the skills to become an eventual starter in the pros so long as he isn't rushed into action too soon.

    • I always just go back to what I said at the time. Trade Burns to the Rams because it's a fantastic deal. I was screaming it. I'm still angry at Fitt over that. Right after he turned down the deal I said he needed to get into a time machine and go back and make the deal. Hate that dude. Ruined our team. Trading D.J was a major mistake because what matters most in the NFL is the passing game, so you never unload a proven #1 WR when there are other options. Always trade a defensive player over a WR if you have that option available. Fitt was precious about defensive players when we had a passing offense that didn't function. That's how know he was completely incompetent. The passing offense is the top priority, so until that is functioning all defensive players are possible trade fodder. At this point we're in a rebuilding year under a new GM and a QB who looks absolutely horrendous. It makes perfect sense, if you follow all of our moves, that we would be the worst team in the NFL. Of course we are. You can't screw up as a GM that many times over the years and not ruin the franchise. We're exactly where we should be, dead last, or bottom 3. Whichever you like. But this is the here and now. Dan did a good job getting our 2nd round pick back, and we won't know about the picks until they take the field in regular season games. We're in dark until then, but if they suck the Panthers media will hide it shamelessly. Remember when Young was supposed to be a football genius? Yeah he was rancid turds out there when live fire started. There is some hope. Either Young improves and we win more games, or he stays about the same and we draft a new QB in 2025. Either way the NFL will help us out of this jam, but all we need is for Dan not to screw it up.
