Will Kunkel says we're only "seriously interested" in three

There was actually pretty ample evidence that Reich was the guy before it happened.

Not really the week before.  It was clear cut it was Ben Johnson or Steichen.  Reich’s name lingered.  But never really seemed the favorite until a few days before

I'd call it informed speculation.

Person has a pretty good track record on these things.

I call that shooting at a target with a shotgun. Any one of those guesses could happen and he would sound clued in. The reality is that one of those things will happen. It doesn't take any insight to know this.

According to Anthony Rizzuti, Will Kunkel of Queen City News says that he believes that we are only "seriously interested" in three of the four top QB prospects in this year's draft (spoiler: and AR15 ain't one of them).

"Will Kunkel of FOX Charlotte was featured on Wednesday’s episode of the Panthers On Tap podcast, joining hosts Curtis Rauen and Bryson Karbley to put a bow on the combine. When going over their options under center in this year’s draft, Kunkel said he believes that there are only three prospects in play for Carolina’s first-round pick—Bryce Young, CJ Stroud and Will Levis."

Here is what Kunkel said:

I think those are the only three that they are seriously interested in,” he said. “I do not think Anthony Richardson is a good play for them, and I don’t think they’re overly interested in him because he’s not ready to play in the NFL right away and they don’t have a guy for him to sit behind right now.”

A few thoughts:

Charlottonians (damned that's close to charlatans), would Kunkel even really know what we really think, because this "report," as Rizutti characterized it,  screams of speculation?

This belief does kind of fall in line with the thought that we will move up and have built a staff to facilitate the development of a young signal caller.

The Anthony Richardson post Combine hype is still real. Beteen Rizzuti's unlimited ceiling comment and Kunkel outright saying that AR would be a "good play" for us, is almost as if they are lamenting that he's presumably not in the plans. But, by Kunkel's own admission, "he's not ready to play."

Take it for what it's worth. There is plenty of rationale for our interest to gravitate towards the "top three," and Kunkel's thoughts could easily be real, but it's not like Kunkel said "I know" as opposed to "I think."

The anthony richardson post combine hype is media driven, not team driven.  We have no idea how teams truly feel right now about anyone.  The media and fans gets caught up in combine numbers, not scouts.  I gurantee you all the scouts in the nfl knew he was going to test well physically long before the combine from watching tape.  The combine is to solidify what you see on tape and to talk to the prospects and other teams, not to totally rearrange a teams draft board.  If a team makes their picks based on the combine and not tape then most likely they are going to be a bad team lol

Ben Johnson dropped out waaayyy before things started heating up.

Reich was being reported as having impressed the team well before the first round of interviews was even finished (Sheena Quick was one of the first to say so as I recall).

I'm also going off of prior years. I'd add that "Athletic" Joe is far superior to "Observer" Joe.

Person's definitely one of the better sources these days along with (obviously) Darin Gantt, Ellis Williams and Mike Kaye, who's risen to a "go to guy" level pretty quickly.

At the national level, the NFL Network guys - Rapoport, Pelissero, Farafolo - are (also obviously) plugged in, along with Albert Breer and Jonathon Jones. among others.

Not saying any of them aren't credible. I'm just saying in the particular instance there's nothing insightful about that statement.  As I've said EVERYONE is speculating and throwing out every possible scenario in which one will actually happen. No sh*t!

Not people Mr scot and as he does it he claims we all are not "getting it"

Not necessarily everybody.

You? Definitely.

You''d fit in pretty well as one of Jim Rome's "clones" given that you seem to value being opinionated and arrogant over being informed.

I really don't think you do.

You're looking for a "gotcha", something you can use to discredit somebody. Maybe that makes you feel more self-assured. I don't know.

It's consistent with the way a lot of sports talk is these days, though. And honestly for me, that's a shame.

I wind up feeling like I'm trying to have a Greg Olsen style discussion in a Jim Rome world.

It feels like Kunkel is often speculating or thinking out loud on what he would do and then pass it on as information he’s learned from sources. So it is hard to trust him imo. But I’m sure he gets it right at times.

A lot of guys do.

Some are better at making it clear which parts are their own opinion vs what they're hearing than others.

Being able to distinguish those things goes a long way toward understanding what's being reported.
