Panthers sign Bengals TE Hayden Hurst

This was a great signing IMO. Some people just want to crap on anything and everything.

And this current TE group (even if we don't add to it), is certainly better than last years and better than a lot of the TE groups in franchise history.

People are acting like we've traditionally had good TE groups. We've literally only had 2 Pro Bowl caliber TEs in team history in Walls & Olsen.

Hurst could easily end up being the 3rd best. I'll take it 100%. Not sure why other fans wouldn't.

Yeah Thomas/Tremble/Ricci are on notice. They had it way too easy under Rhule. They gotta compete for their spots now because at least one of them is gone

I can see Tremble being used in a hybrid HB/TE role while Thomas and Hurst are used in 2TE sets. Ricci and Sullivan may be odd men out and fighting for a final spot.

I could also see Thomas getting moved out the building and Tremble being the #2 and Ricci being the backup/ST guy.

It’s certainly possible but unlikely due to the cap hit. He’s also our best blocking TE which isn’t saying much. If we were able to get a better blocking TE in the draft e.g. that monster TE out of GA, then I’d certainly be comfortable bidding farewell to Thomas.

Something people shouldn't look past: Hurst in the playoffs this year.

It may seem like an average TE line season stat wise, but he made some huge 3rd down conversions and other big plays in the playoffs against Buffalo and KC.

The more I stew on this signing, the more I'm a fan.  He's a great locker room guy on top of it, just overall mucho bueno addition.

    • No saying he mostly sucks is saying that he doesn’t suck the minority of the time.   Like if he took 17 tests and had a couple of really good showings and a handful of pretty good scores sprinkled in among the typical sub par results.   Like a golfer who went out and shot an 89.  There will be some real nice shots sprinkled in there but at the end of the day it is still 89.
    • It's worth mentioning... Game 1: Oct 11 in Raleigh. 4-3 OT win with a complete starting lineup. Game 2: Dec 13 in Philly. 4-3 SO win without Jaccob Slavin. Game 3: Dec 14 in Raleigh. 3-2 SO win with a complete starting lineup. Game 4: Apr 13 in Philly. 3-2 SO loss with the AHL roster.  Those early season games were no indication of the Canes team that finished the season. Miller and Ehlers were still trying to figure things out, Nikishin was still a work in progress and the Stankoven line was just another line. Make no mistake, the Canes team Philly will see is nothing close to what they saw at any point in the season. If the top line starts producing, Freddie stays hot and the blue line does what it does, this could be a sweep as well.
