I’d rather trade another first and pay Chris Jones what he wants than pay Burns what he wants.

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard of

You'd rather give up yet another first round pick to get to pay $30 million (and thus likely not able to pay Brown at the same position next year) over just paying that $30 million to Burns and then still keeping our 2025 first round pick and then able to re-sign Brown?

That's basically taking Chris Jones over Burns (who is 4 years younger), Brown, and a 2025 First (remember we don't have our 2nd that year anymore either)

People complaining about Burns not being signed.
Gonna be really entertaining reading the posts that complain that we just overpayed him when his play inevitably doesn’t stack up to what he is being payed.
Ya’ll know it is gonna happen.

Depends how you mean it

I'm personally in the camp of saying we just need to pay the man what he's asking for, that in 2 years it will be borderline top 10 for pass rushers anyways (plus I think he's going to break out for 15+ sacks this year).

If his play doesn't live up to it, I won't say we overpaid, because we do need to pay that to get him longterm right now in this market, but I'll say that he's not playing like he is being paid to and I'll put it on him.

Unless he's asking for like $32 a year and we give it to him, it will always be on him to live up to the contract, not about whether Fitterer made a bad deal.  I understand why the team is trying to get it lower, but paying 28-30 a year for him is a completely fair and justifiable price for him right now in this market.

But yes, the people who don't want to give him that number right now will of course say we overpaid for him if that happens.

What I mean is we pay him and then he plays the exact same. Disappearing in games, taken out by TEs, and manhandled by bigger OL.
Pretty much the same thing that happened after we overpayed Shaq.
Nothing changed and he was still the same mediocre LB he has always been.
Not calling Burns mediocre. He is a really good pass rusher, but at what he wants I expect him to be a good at everything and elite at some things.

What’s stopping him from holding out in 3 years time if contacts keep going up? Can’t just keep bending over backwards for players that are on contract

That's literally how the sport works though

Are you saying because he might blow up over the next 3 years and thus be able to hold out again and demand more money, you don't want to re-sign him right now?

Maybe one of the craziest arguments I've ever heard.  He might be so good that we have to do this again in 3 years, so let's just avoid having 3 years of his great play so we don't have to deal with that.

You do realize that you're basically saying there is no point to ever signing good players out of fear of them holding out at some point, right?

Has he blown up enough now to demand TJ Watt money or more? Don’t think so. You’re happy for the side to cuckold themselves for Burns next it will be Brown and so on. And no I don’t want us to never sign good players what I don’t want is good players to try and hold my team ransom for elite money.

If he wants elite money pull the offer let him play out his contract see how he looks in the new scheme. If he blows up pay him elite won’t be much different to what he wants now. Plus the team has franchise tags and trading him in their back pocket

We would still sign Brown. Pressure comes less from the initial quick move around the OT. QBs rarely take even 5 step drops these days which makes you have to go through the OT as opposed to around. Plays come out quick now, and even if you beat the OT around the outside the QB is deep in the pocket and any reasonably mobile QB can easily escape. Most sacks come from DBs covering the initial two reads of the QB causing the ball stay in the QBs hands, and it’s the D-lineman who can win on the second move that are there to sack the QB. Burns plays a position that doesn’t cause as much destruction to modern offenses.

Having D. Brown and Chris Jones on our D-Line plus Jaycee Horn is a better plan for the next 5 years.

    • TAMU had such a weird draft. Usually you'd be bragging your ass off about three DL drafted in the top two rounds except that the narrative around all three was about how badly they were misused by TAMU. LOL
    • Many Panthers fans are already excited about second-round selection Nic Scourton for a variety of reasons including but not limited to: the Panthers needed to recharge the position group, Scourton had a late first-round grade according to many (including the Panthers), and he fit this season's modus operandi of stopping the run now and forever. However, Scourton was seen early on as one of the top-3 EDGE guys in this class but fell due to not having quite the season at Texas A&M as he did prior at Purdue (his sophomore season). It's been revealed since then a few different things that speak to that dip in production... Texas A&M, for one, requires each player on their line to be able to hold two gaps. This also explains why we saw low production across the board from the other two TA&M prospects but were still being heavily touted. Scourton was also said to have bulked up to 280lbs in order to fulfill this role and noticeably suffered from it. He's expected to play this season with Carolina at 255 - 260 which is very different from most situations. In most situations, teams are wanting players to gain 15 - 30. Since Scourton is going to be playing at his Purdue weight, I thought it would make sense to dive more into that tape. Y'all... we might have gotten something special... Let's take a quick peek at the stats before we start drooling over some highlights. First, a summary of the last two seasons for Scourton: Second, the game splits: The first thing that pops up for me is how Scourton's sack numbers were cut in half his senior year. We've already pointed out issues with scheme that impacted the TA&M linemen from racking up numbers, but seeing the game splits it's clear that Scourton didn't exactly feast on inferior competition while at Purdue. He had two two-sack games (vs. Michigan (2023 - 2024 champs), Indiana) and a 10-tackle game (vs. Nebraska). I also see the 2024 games where he went up against two top-10 tackles (Will Campbell from LSU + Armand Membou from Missouri) that I watched leading up to the draft.  For those who just want a summary: Scourton looked elite at Purdue and is going to be rotating in often during his rookie campaign. I originally had him penciled in as the second-string, strong-side edge defender behind Clowney but I wouldn't be surprised to see the team have him and Pat Jones II moving around when they rotate in in order to find where Nic looks best. Here's a highlight reel to replace that Cialias you lost in your recliner tonight:   For those that want a little more: Below I'll be linking the linking the five games I've mentioned above. If you plan to watch all of them, I highly recommend going in the order listed as that will allow you to see him vs. Campbell and then Membou while dealing with the aforementioned things he dealt with at Texas A&M before seeing him look unstoppable in 2023 when he was allowed to play both at a comfortable weight and in a scheme that didn't require him two cover two gaps nearly every play. vs. Will Campbell (2024) vs. Armand Membou (2024) vs. Nebraska (2023) vs. Michigan (2023)   vs. Indiana (2023)
    • Yea, i honestly think he had almost as much say as Dan.  One of the main reasons I think that is Eager has said before he was ever with the Panthers, that you trade away picks for a qb and for any other position you do pick swaps, and that's exactly what we did.
