I’m all for it. Why does everyone instinctively poo on the guy actually producing the product rather than the old rich guys who mostly inherited their ownership stake?

I hate to break it to you buddy but the players are not actually the product. No one really cares about grown men running around in tights. The only thing people care about is the teams and the brands associated with them.

Totally, buddy. I know I follow the Panthers solely for their sweet color scheme and mascot/branding. It’s got nothing to do with watching Smitty and Jake pull off X Clown against the Rams, or Luke stiff arm Romo on Thanksgiving. The NFL could throw a jersey and tights on any one of us and we’d be just as compelling to watch.

Your take is bad and you should feel bad.

The fact that you're a Panthers fan tells me that you are a fan because of the branding. If you were a fan because of the players, you would be a fan of a different team. We have no good players.

Here's another example. The vast majority of players in the XFL played power 5 football and have additional experience they didn't have in college, making them better players. At worst, the XFL is on an equal footing with the ACC from a talent standpoint. So why do hundreds of times more people watch ACC football than XFL football? Give me a reason that isn't branding.

And if the players didn't need the brands for people to watch, the NFLPA would just stage its own games. No one would watch that so they don't do it.

I mean, branding definitely plays a part, but let’s not kid ourselves. The talent level in the NFL is insane. I watch the panthers and am invested because they’re my local team, but you can bet your ass I’m also gonna watch Justin Jefferson (pre injury) and others because those guys are incredible.

me and the panthers were born in Charlotte NC in 1993. Its bigger than a brand its my HOMETOWN.

At least he can make an NFL throw, right? I kid (sort of).

I even saw a tweet (are they called "xeets" now?) that claimed Caleb would have gone #1 in a hypothetical draft with Burrow and Lawrence.

Seriously, half the rage that's been consuming the Huddle about Bryce is because of giving the #1 pick to Chicago...which could have been used to pick this guy as no one will take a WR at #1.

And before anyone says, "nah, we'd just take Maye", Maye will be dissected to the nth degree during draft season like all these players and he'll suddenly become a questionable pick at #1, and that's if the chatter doesn't cause him to fall during the year. I could see trading the pick though, and that's a rightful complaint of a missed opportunity.

I very seriously doubt he would've gone ahead of Lawrence. Possibly Burrow due to the age and one year wonder concern.

But Lawrence was nearly universally considered the best QB prospect since Luck.

I really think some of the shine is going to come off of Williams when people stop watching him as a college QB and actually start evaluating him as an NFL prospect. Everything happens too slow for him after the snap. He just doesn't process quickly enough. I thought it might have just been a luxury of opportunity but the last two games suggest he can't speed it up even when he needs to. Maybe getting into the NFL and focusing heavily in that will help him but if he can't speed it up significantly it ain't gonna translate. You can't hold the ball as long as he does in the NFL.

I think scouts are over evaluating these "Mahomes" traits as in off balance throws and constantly looking for the big play.  Honestly that might be a big reason why we picked Young over Stroud.  Stroud was fundamentally sound and sat back delivering dimes quickly.  Young was more exciting extending plays and throwing these off balance throws while avoiding defenders.  One is a lot harder to replicate in the NFL vs the other...

Don't get me wrong, I think the guy is a helluva prospect. He checks a LOT of boxes. But slow processing speed will likely prove to be an Achilles heel if he can't speed it up.

    • Like many of the old heads, I’ve been here for a long time.  I got a lot of respect for everyone on this board for your dedication to this team.  We’ve all been through it during the tougher years. At this point in life, I’m not one to judge anyone’s level of dedication, or their reasons why anymore.  Time, and a lot of bad football, will do that.  For me, it’s simple.  We share a common bond.  For that, I love and appreciate all of you crazy SOB’s. For me, last season was at a minimum, entertaining.  BY lead a young team to multiple come from behind 4th qtr wins.  That showed me heart, and that he has the clutch gene.  That’s the wildcard intangible.  For me, that was fun to watch even  if it was mindbogglingly frustrating at times.  Over the past two seasons, we have progressively built a better team around him.  On paper, the defense should be better this season.  That’ll help.  Let’s see what he can do as the other guys continue to develop too.  Besides, his contract is cheap for a few more years, and we just made some smart cap decisions during the draft. Let’s see how it shakes out.
    • Hiring Shula & his Cam save us playbook.
    • I would very much liked to have seen Jake Delhomme's career if Tommy Jone no hurt Jake.  I just know that roster and the leadership were destined to hit paydirt but Jake was never the same after the elbow injury, and unfortunately he was the sole reason they didn't make it back to the big one.  I think that 08 team was the best in the league, and Jake masked his inability well all season til the Arizona game put it all on display.  I'll go back to the season prior even and say the 07 team was primed to be a competitor.  Jake was off to a fantastic start that year (for a Panthers QB).  They may have been a championship caliber club for a few seasons after 08 too.
