Hurney at least had an eye for talent. He was about as boom or bust as it got. His hits were home runs. His whiffs were catastrophic.

His whiffs were almost entirely in late rounds, and even then he had a ton of really good hits.

The fact of the matter is - we've never had a better drafter than him. And there was nobody in the league better at drafting generational talent in the first round. We got absolutely spoiled by a decade of first round home runs.

I wouldn't call Round 2 a "late round".

And giving the generational tag to anybody except Newton and Kucehly would be...generous.

Hell, outside of Newton, every single draft pick in 2011 was pretty much a bust.

We didn't "repeatedly get high draft picks". 7-9 was our floor for most of Hurney's tenure. Three of our best picks, Chris Gamble Jon Beason and DeAngelo Williams, were late first-rounders.

Couple factual points here...

Gamble was a trade up pick after the Super Bowl season. No issues with him.

Beason was taken after a trade down. The Jets traded up to our spot (#14). We got Beason. They got Darrelle Revis. Which of those two would you call "generational"?

With Williams, we got lucky. Our draft board that year had Laurence Maroney as the top runningback, but the Patriots took him before we had the chance (basically saved us feom ourselves).

It wasn't too long after that that Marty started trading away future first rounders and using our next top picks on guys like Everette Brown and Armanti Edwards.

Shocking he's not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame as an executive, I know 😄

Julius Peppers says hi.

Your hate for Marty Hurney is so f*cking funny. Like this dude banged your wife or something. He wasn’t the greatest GM of all time but he is easily the best GM the Panthers have had and one of the best 1st round drafters of all time. But I guess hitting his first rounders for the better part of two decades is just lucky to you.

Meanwhile your best friend Dave Gettleman is a certified dick who whiffed on several of his first rounders, and let’s not even get to the worst Panthers GM of all time Scott Fitterer. I’d take Hurney era competency back right about now.

I mean, I agree, but it's widely considered a good thing if you can hit on a couple of players during a draft. Three is really good, and four or more is phenomenal. Hurney had some decent drafts, just not exceptional ones, but most don't.  Drafting is only a part of the battle though, probably the most important part, but only a part. I wasn't too enthused with his acquisitions, nor was I all that enamored with cap management duruing his tenure (whoever was handling it). He did steal Olsen though.

Ownership.

Richardson believed in Hurney. Hell, he even fired a guy with a much better record so he could bring him back.

Tepper waited too long to fire Hurney then forced his next hire to work under Rhule.

Tepper just actually chose even more poorly.

Even more poorly than Gettleman.

Whew, we've had some bad GMs.

There's no way Fitt or anyone in this front office should still have a job.

Worst team in the league by far (which, considering the level of sick not just in division, but in conference is quite an accomplishment) and you traded away your first pick....you sold the farm for the first pick and the coaching staff you hired smell of the hunger games, then your head coach gets fired and the whole coaching staff you spent mega millions on us a getting fired too?

Wow what a failure. Probably the worst failure in the history of the league.

I know it's on Tepper, but the heads that roll on this (and there will be) dont belong to the owner and his wife.

And your choice to make things personal rather than factual, as usual, is noted 🙄

Correct, which is why (despite the personality issues) Gettleman is still the best GM we've had.

Highlighting Marty making good draft picks while still building losing teams is like pointing to great plays made in a lost game. Yeah, cool play...but we still lost.

And again, Marty gave us Rhule.

Good point, Tepper alienating himself from lots of staff prospects by pretty much having to get rid of Evero/Tabor/Campen/Mccown/Reich/Duce/Caldwell/Dom Capers, the list goes on. That group is pretty much connected to every single HC prospect Tepper is going to try to lure in and they aren't going to have great things to say about working for him. He's probably going to make some desperation hire, or try a college guy again if he can't do better than a Nathaniel Hackett type guy.

    • LOL... Yet again proving you can't look below anything than what you see on the surface Mock drafts ARE NOT draft grades They are what people think will happen.  They are mocking teams taking QB's in the top 5 of the draft because that's just historically how drafts go regardless of the grades on the QBs.  Almost every draft expert, even those mocking QB's going high, have said time and time again that none of these QB's actually grade out as those type of picks. This is again, where I say you don't like to actually read what I have to say, because I already explained it. 2022 the exact same thing happened, mock drafts had guys like Pickett and Willis going in the Top 5 because that's just what teams usually do, but GM's listened to their prospect grades and knew they weren't worth taking that high, so they didn't. It's not to say QB's won't go that high this year, but it's to say that they aren't graded out as elite QB prospects.  Mock drafts
    • Have you seen the mock drafts lately?   Most of them have us taking a QB. Just because you aren't high on these QBs doesn't mean the Panthers or other teams aren't.   If you want me to be real I just think you a Tmac homer and all you care about is us drafting him. It's why you get so defensive when people mention other prospects.   Be open to other people's ideas. Nobody in this thread is saying anything bad about your boy Tmac.
    • Oh good lord Interest doesn't mean interest in making a bad trade to take the player, that's why I had such a long post, to accurately describe why those are two different things, but you don't like to listen to that stuff.  Being interested in a player doesn't live in a vacuum. It's very simple... there isn't a #1 draft pick type of grade on any of these QB's, if there was, we'd just take them.  You can't bluff a pick everyone knows you won't make, and trying to trade the pick is the CLEAR signal that you're not taking the QB. Just because the Raiders would have interest, doesn't mean they're going to bail us out of a situation we don't want to be in, they'd be smart about it and just sit put, let us take a non QB as we'd be telling the world we're not taking one just by trying to trade the pick, and then they'd take him at #2 (either with their own pick or by trading less to get that one). Oh, and your point of "if nobody is willing to make the trade, you obviously just take the best QB" is quite literally the dumbest thing I've ever read on here. If nobody is willing to trade up to take the QB, then it's OBVIOUS that the QB isn't worth taking with that pick, so OBVIOUSLY taking the best QB there is just OBVIOUSLY stupid and a bad pick. The moral of it is if there is a QB worth taking, we're taking them and not making the trade.  If there isn't a QB worth taking there, nobody is trading up to #1 to take one, we just showed the NFL how bad of an idea that is 2 years ago, it's really not hard to see. You keep making up this mythical situation where there is a QB who has shown to be worth trading up to #1 for and we'll be able to leverage that into a trade.  But we're the most QB needy team in the league, if we end up with the #1 pick, either we are taking a QB #1 or no QB is going #1 unless we get VERY lucky and two teams in the Top 5 fall in love with one prospect and we can play them off each other and fleece one of them. But again, I can't see that happening, as if there was a QB worthy of that, we're just taking him ourselves.
