With how many impact WRs have been coming on as rookies the past 5ish years, it's truly amazing we haven't found any since DJ Moore worth a damn.

it's actually crazy.  Most teams these days have a pretty easy time fixing the WR spot when they want to.  And they transition fast in today's with the rules catering to the pass game.

I definitely don't think you can give QBs and WRs the same timetable they had back in the day.  It doesn't take 3 years to show your stuff.  If you can't show you are special early given the NFL has basically fixed the league for their success....it likely ain't happening.

Exactly.

I will say, there has been a slight counter/correction in the past ~2 years. Defenses are able to clamp down a bit more, but QBs are still operating out at such a higher and more efficient rate than previous eras.  That shift was late-2000s/early-2010s.

The league is set up for their success so the ones not cutting the mustard really stand out early on in their careers.

Even beyond the top guys like Chase, Waddle, Devonta, Jefferson, G Wilson, Olave, etc...you look at dudes like Pittman, Higgins, St Brown, Nico Collins, Pickens, Watson, Pierce, Doubs, Rice, Nacua, Dell, the list just keeps going haha.  Like that took effort to miss out on that much WR talent when we were drafting them and it was a need.

We get a freaking guy nicknamed after a jaw problem, Shi Smith and Mingo.

Looking at our draft history, I'm convinced that any wr we pick in r2 will automatically be a bust. And yea. It's been a problem through multiple different gms, hc, and owners lol.

I call it the Rae Carruth Curse.  Yes, we did draft Steve Smith after drafting Carruth (Moose was drafted the year before we drafted Carruth) , but at the time, they were mostly interested in his special teams abilities.

Panthers picks at WR beginning with Rae Carruth (1997) with round drafted in parentheses:

  • 1997: Rae Carruth (1)
  • 1998:  Donald Hayes (4), Jim Turner (7)
  • 2001: Steve Smith (3)  (best panther draft ever--Morgan, Jenkins, Smith.)
  • 2003: Walter Young (7)
  • 2004:   Keary Colbert (2), Drew Carter (5)
  • 2007:   Dwayne Jarrett (2), Ryne Robinson (4)
  • 2010:  Brandon Lafell (2), Armanti Edwards (3),  David Gettis (5)
  • 2011: Kealoha Pilares (5)
  • 2012: Joe Adams (4)
  • 2014: Kelvin Benjamin (1)
  • 2015: Devin Funchess (2)
  • 2017: Curtis Samuel (2)
  • 2018: DJ Moore (1)
  • 2019: Terry Godwin (7)
  • 2021: Terrace Marshall Jr (2), Shi Smith (6)
  • 2023: Jonathan Mingo (2).

Taking a look at the first rounders ONLY:

  • 1997: Rae Carruth (1)
  • 2014: Kelvin Benjamin (1)
  • 2018: DJ Moore (1)

Taking a look at the Second rounders ONLY:

  • 2004:   Keary Colbert (2)
  • 2007:   Dwayne Jarrett (2)
  • 2010:  Brandon Lafell (2)
  • 2015: Devin Funchess (2)
  • 2017: Curtis Samuel (2)
  • 2021: Terrace Marshall Jr (2)
  • 2023: Jonathan Mingo (2)

Yikes

We've drafted 7 WRs in the 2nd. Samuel has arguably built a solid career to date and its too early to tell on Mingo. TMJ, Funchess, Jarrett and Colbert are the other 4.

I was being hyperbolic. Apparently went over most heads.

But even Curtis has seemed to thrive more so with Washington than he did with us. Seems like he had a few lingering issues here and never took it to the next level.

I’ve been a fan long before Smitty was drafted in the 3rd round. If you’re going to call me out at least get your facts right. He’s not a 2nd round draft pick.

    • I want the conversations at season's end to be more about what else we need to build onto the foundation to be playoff contenders and less about the fultility of drafting yet another QB and hiring yet another coach because as long as Tepper is the owner, it doesn't matter what this team does.
    • yeah I was hoping  that we stayed put & drafted Levis at #9  i even said on here after we foolishly traded up for Bryce Young that I would not be surprised whatsoever if the Bears were picking #1 overall with our pick this year but what ...just saying
