SI writers grade the Morgan hire and claim we may also hire one of the other candidates to work under Morgan….

Recommended Posts

I was reading sports illustrated grading of our Morgan hire, and noticed a few tidbits from the 4 write ups. Seems that we may hire one of the other candidates we interviewed to work under Morgan as well.

Schuyler Callihan: C+.

I think Morgan has the chance to be really good in this role. He knows what it takes to win in Carolina and knows this roster better than anyone they interviewed. However, I think going with an external candidate would have provided a cleaner slate. There are some rumors that one of the candidates they interviewed will join Morgan in the front office and if that goes through, then this grade gets rounded up.

Matt Alquiza: C+.

I’m not going to pretend like I know the inner machinations of the Carolina front office, but it’s odd to me that they’re retaining Morgan. On some level, he has been involved in the disaster that the last few years have been. On the positive side, he has personnel director experience in Seattle and Buffalo, two well run, successful teams. It seems as if they’ll hire somebody with financial acumen to pair with his football knowledge. It’s a structure that can work, but I’m dubious.

Side note: I have a feeling Morgan will absolutely crush his new role and make us a Super Bowl contender in no time. My reasoning for saying this? The Huddle seems to overall hate this move. Typically any moves we make that the huddle gets excited about, the opposite always ends up happening from FA signings, to draft picks, to office moves etc 😁

Absolutely. This was my first thought when I saw Dan was hired.

Do most people hate it? Then it might be good.

Do most people love it? It’s guaranteed failure.

Those dudes could have wrote up their "grades" while standing in the unemployment line..... just saying.

I definitely didn’t take the grade to heart because that ultimately means the same as a huddler giving a grade. I did find it interesting that two of the 4 mentioned us hiring one of the candidates that we interviewed to work under Morgan. It brings up an interesting conversation because many, Including myself did not want a candidate that was more of an “analytical” guy and it will be interesting to pair one of them up working under Morgan who seems like a traditional GM with scouting experience.

So I take it there will be minimal change to the scouting department overall after what has been some of the worst drafting in franchise history?

Who knows, but that does look like the likely direction.

Sound reasoning…explains a lot about you actually

Joe Person mentioned that if we do create a new position, it would be subject to the Rooney Rule so we couldn't necessarily just say "Okay, you didn't get that job but you're the man for this one."

Unknown if that's true but it sounds correct...

Sorry man, but in the past few years, the huddle has been way more right than the team’s moves. Did you hear about the trade offer we declined for Burns? Have you seen our drafting?

The team has been absolutely gutted talent wise and literally every decision the team has made has been wrong except some small exceptions. Feel free to point to any move the huddle hated that turned out to be a great move.

    • Even all the rookie QB's who haven't played a single snap ranked above him? I really hope Bryce is using all this as motivation in some capacity. Because if this doesn't motivate him I don't know what will.
    • Of course. That’s what I said. Bad goalie play and the style of defense. Florida played amazing.  Rods decision to stick with a struggling Freddie cost us. Plus, Florida may be more talented than us and they play a very heavy game. Something we don’t do well minus Svech.  Glad the rangers lost.
    • You should because before the preseason fiasco and the start of the season fiasco, all the reports, including Frank’s responses, were that Fitterer and Reich were in lock step. Remember the press conference where Fitterer talked about both he and Frank saying who they wanted before and after the draft process and that they both picked Young and it was glorious? People got hung up on Tepper saying the point guard analogy in April when Brown was interviewed by a Panthers reporter describing how a QB needs to be a point guard in huge detail. That was in February. I think Tepper was just parroting Brown to make himself look like he knew what he was doing. Mrs. Tepper hugging Bryce always overshadowed CJ saying how he called her Mama Tepp. We fuged up as a team, probably more so because Fitterer always said he had Young as his #1 the year before, probably because we looked at all the QBs that year as well. Reich’s love for CJ started when he got on the hot seats for frankly doing a horrific job. He's been in the league a long time and has a lot of media friends and that was a face saving CYA which we know well with many years of Hurney. Still amazing to think how much better the team was under Rhule/Hurney before Fitterer got any control when Rhule was on the hot seat.
