The Burns bashing is way beyond the levels of crazy. Did he have a down year by his standards yes, but so did the entire team.

ask Derek Brown if he had a down year

or Luvu

Brian Burns is a one dimensional pass rusher and on top of that his pass rushing game is one dimensional.  That’s the real problem.

he isn’t our best defender.   That’s a title I’d maybe give him one season.

Burns is at best a situational pass rusher and should be used as such. What we can not afford to do is pay this mother hubbard 30m a season.

He is not a cornerstone piece of an elite D.

Hes not going to demand 30 million his value at this point is 20-25 million and we can absoutely afford to pay him that.Screenshot_20240129_213514_Chrome.thumb.jpg.4cc157f44f3e336292497d55f9208c25.jpg

This fine.. he generates pressure at an abnormal rate. disruption is production. and for 20-25 mill a year thats what i want him to do.

How many of those other guys played as much as Burns did? How many of them were put into pass rush situations vs playing the run or being told to hold the edge? Just looking at one stat doesn't tell the whole story.

Also, there's not a player on the roster that shouldn't be traded if the price is right and that includes Brown, Thelen, and Burns. The Panthers need a huge infusion of talent and most likely a couple years away from winning at the earliest. If getting that talent infusion means trading away the more win now guys, so be it.

If that is true that also hold true in other areas. If Burns only had 8-9 sack how many times did he blow by tackles and force qbs off their spot and comfort zone.. disruption is production.

Eh, at the time I was in the camp that they made the right decision not trading him. In retrospect, I was wrong. I thought we’d take Stroud and at least be competitive and be ready for playoff aspirations in year two.  In reality, those draft pics would have been waaaay more valuable than those 40 qb pressures. Take Burns away and those pressures don’t dissipate, someone else would get some if not most of them. A lot can be done with scheme. Even now, if we can get a first, take it and run. Even the Chiefs’.  We can spread that $20-30mil around and use it to improve the team in more areas.

Gross-Matos generated 47% of the pressure in 57% of the snaps.

Barno generated 20% of the pressure in 23% of the snaps.

Houston 25% in 22%, Haynes 25% in 17% of the snaps.

It's just a matter of snap count.

Thanks for providing clarity. When I saw the OP's stats, the first thing that I thought is, "These have no context." I figured that snap count correlated with productivity. You provided the evidence.

I don’t seen Burns disrupting much.  I see him doing the same thing pretty much all the time.  Doing nothing in the run game and speed rushing the edge outside.  Rinse and repeat.

and he isn’t as good as the Hassan Reddicks of the world.  So I got no use paying him like he is some tier past Reddick.

We can afford to pay Burns because we aren’t going to be paying a QB big money for a while.

besides, his salary will be no worse than what we did for Shaq or Ian Thomas — relatively speaking

Yes, lets continue our history of paying mid players top end contracts.

You do not overpay Burns. You trade and get players that'll provide more value for the money with draft picks as well. Burns is not elite and we don't need to overpay when we have major needs elsewhere.

    • Same. I would prefer a MNF game earlier in the season. As if more likely has some significance in case things go south this season. If we perform well enough we could even get another game forced to a Sunday night spot later in the season.
    • Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
    • My top-5 JAGS: 1. Tommy Tremble: May not ever be top-tier, but has been solid and you never doubt the effort. 2. Cade Mays: Not bad for a 6th rounder. Hated to see him go. 3. Brady Christensen: One of the most versatile backup OLs in the NFL. Hopefully we re-sign him. 4. Trevis Gipson: Quietly was really solid depth last season. Glad we brought him back. 5. Brycen Tremayne: Has been solid depth at WR, flashing at times last year.
