Unnecessary Bluntness: Do Panthers already have a draft crush?

I saw him play once or twice and he looked impressive. But what we really need is someone who can get separation and get open, and I didn’t see that, so he doesn’t feel like a fit in the second round for us as we need impact starters. But he’s exciting once he has the ball no doubt.

We don’t need yet another can’t separate guy.

Personally, I hope we don’t have a crush. That’s Marty (post round 1) and Scott all over again.

How about we evaluate all the late first/early 3rd WRs and figure which ones we don’t want and then rank the rest. We’ve done so poorly drafting since 2017, our last actual draft with multiple good starters and 4 players still contributing at a high level 7 years later.

C’mon Dan, please get us a good draft that will still look good after this season.

Keon Coleman Draft and Combine Prospect Profile | NFL.com

He’s not sudden and doesn’t have great speed, so beating press and creating breathing room against tight man coverages will depend on his ability to improve as a route-runner.

Weaknesses

  • Press coverage can blanket his release and catch a ride.
  • Below-average acceleration getting out of breaks and cuts.
  • Could struggle finding separation to avoid excessive contested catches.

coleman can out muscle just about any DB. if you can't get much in the way of separation, be able to highpoint the ball and/or out muscle the DB. ideally you have someone who can get separation and who physically can get those contested catches. But being able to do either one consistently will help immensely. i'll take either. hopefully we can get one of each in this draft. a route/separation specialist and a big receiver who can get those contested catches. whatever they do, they just have to be reliable and maybe get some YAC.

How?  Legette is a few months older.  They had the exact same 10 yard split.  Same weight, Mingo is 1" taller.  Mingo has longer arms and much bigger hands.  (Legette has really small hands for a receiver).  They had the same vertical, Mingo had a better broad jump.   Legette runs faster in an untouched straight line.  Both struggled to get seperation in college and had one good year.   Both were known for contested catches because they didnt get open or run very good routes.  Neither did any of the agility drills because neither has very good change of direction or quickness.

Im still not sold on giving up on Mingo after one season with piss poor coaching and play throughout the entire team other one or two individual players. As far as how they are different, we will either see a difference if he plays for the Panthers or if another team takes him instead. You will see Mingo different as well as I don't believe we were seeing the real Mingo last season either. These guys can get separation, both can in fact. I don't think they are going to take Legette anyhow so you won't have to worry about it in the long run.

We can have all the crushes we want in this draft. The problem is that we'll still be outside trying to get past the bouncers while everyone else is hitting them up.

We aren't getting any VIP treatment this time, there will be no tableside champagne service and the bar will be crowded four deep before we get in the door.

Im not saying Mingo is a bust for sure already.  I'm saying what you saw on tape with Mingo in college is still a problem in the NFL.  Not saying he cant get better but even if Mingo comes good that just makes Legette's skillset redundant.

Greg Little comes to mind. Marty said he was going to take Little at 16 if Burns was gone. Marty had to literally be eating a meatball sub for every minute of the OL day to miss the fact that Little looked like the worst OL at the combine in all drills. So many good players available at our 2nd and 3rd rounders like AJ Brown, Metcalf, Maxx Crosby (we had a private visit with him) and a ton of IOL who are still starters now and we blow both picks to reach for a guy that no one wanted anymore. Dude was talked about as a first rounder before the  combine and was a falling knife after and we sprinted to catch it. It was like the Darnold trade. We were competing with ourselves to get both of them.

It used to be Pantherspride84 or something 13 years ago or so but i totally forgot all that account info a long long time ago and ive mostly always lurked anyways so just made a new one a few years back.  Im not claiming to have any sort of inside information or anything.  I just listen to a lot of draft podcasts and such and ive never heard anyone ever mention him possibly going in the first.   So I'm just basing it on that and my own opinion from what I've seen.

I was joking with you btw.

I’m not big on either FSU WR for our situation.

But I want 2 of our first 3 picks to be WRs.  So I could tolerate it pending the other brought a totally different game to the table.

Mitchell is my favorite if he fell.  Then Ladd.  I like Leggette if he was there in the 3rd.

Leggette has more explosive plays and stood out big time in the games I watched but…his combine numbers were pretty similar to Mingo.  Leggette struggled against press apparently and that’s a red flag

Mingo also had fairly pedestrian production in college.

Mingo and Leggette don’t seem comparable WRs to the eye test though.   I mean, what Leggette did this season just isn’t something Mingo ever really showed in college.  Leggette plays bigger.
