Seeking Insights on RB and TE

As far as the OL, look at the Saints when they took Kamara. Point being we modeled after that OL. Anyhow, Bingo! A weapon right out of the gate, and I am pretty sure he went in the 3rd.

I believe he was outshining CMC in stretches those first couple of years.

edit: I wouldn’t  turn down a Tolbert comp. Bowling ball, hands, nimble feet, will; and can block.... yes that would do nicely.

I think Chubba has earned the right to receive most of the carries.  We need a receiving rb.  Especially with what it seems like Canales likes to do.  I would love to pick up Dylan Laube in the 5th or so.  Great receiver and blocker.

The think about Chubba and Sanders--they have brick hands--Chubba was better last year, but I would not consider him a dual action threat.  I am not that happy with his pass blocking either, and in the NFL, that is a very underrated skill for a RB.  Sanders was a terrible signing.

I wouldn’t put Sanders close to Kincaid or La Porta. I don’t think he’s worth a 2nd. It would be a big kick in the nuts if we go TE this year instead of last year. TE should have been last year instead of Mingo. This is why we’ve sucked so bad lately. We overdraft at positions that aren’t deep instead of targeting guys who fall because it’s a deep class. Kincaid and La Porta had great seasons for rookies. TEs don’t typically have great production as rookies, even the great ones.

At Texas. Sanders played with his hand in the dirt on the LOS about 75% of the time, which is why I feel that he is undervalued a bit.   LaPorta, I think he was a second rounder, had 657 yards during the 2022 season.  Sanders, with 3 WRs on his team who will probably be drafted in the 2024 draft (two in rounds 1/2),  and the best RB in college football, had 607 yards.  That is close.

As far as running back, I believe it is the play in round 4. We may miss the best one on our board but it will probably still be a top 5 back and they are kind of splitting hairs from 1 to 5.

I agree.  I keep having this feeling they take Shipley from Clemson, but I want the RB from Kentucky.

I’m talking as a prospect. Would you put the 2022 Iowa offense in the same stratosphere as Texas? I don’t even know who Iowa’s QB was. Also, how many times did Sanders take advantage of being wide open because of the WRs? LaPorta had 657 yards on a passing offense 2037 passing yards. Sanders had 682 yards on a passing offense with just over 4000 passing yards.

I still don’t think Sanders is on the level of the Kincaid/La Porta end of 1st/early 2nd prospects from the super deep 2023 TE draft.

Prolly not, but in fairness, most TEs are probably not a good idea before round 3.  Good exchange.

Honestly, I haven't looked into TE at all, but as the Harmon & McDonald vid (that I posted in the other thread) was coming to an end, they said they would do TEs next and McDonald said in passing that,  "There is only one, maybe two tight ends that matter."

I said that because basically it's a dart throw. We may have more upside on the roster. That's the general feeling that I get.

As for RBs, I really haven't looked into them either. Maybe I'll get around to it and maybe not.

Lots of credit goes to Cam for a steller rookie year, but we were also built a hell of a lot better for a rookie QB. Said this in another thread... legendary WR, two absolute stud RBs who were also great receivers, and two stud TEs.

Cam would have been good, but he needed all those parts to have a great rookie season.

What did Bryce have? Hint: none of that.

We are still weak at WR, especially for the long term. Imo, we need to get at least two out of this draft. We are abysmal at TE. There are maybe 5 in this draft who would be an immediate upgrade. We need one of them. And Chuba scares no one. Get us a damn playmaking hoss of an RB. There's at least 10 who would REALLY help us out. Get one of them as well.

Go BPA....Best Playmakers Available. Get us some damn offensive talent. Overload on them. Fug balance. Just get yourself some damn offensive play makers.

Hello pals and close impersonal friends,

As we progress towards the draft, it seems to me that this off-season and the draft will be dedicated to providing Bryce with all the weapons he needs to be successful.   We all jumped to OL and WR, and rightly so.  However, do we have that game-changing RB and a TE threat that are good enough to qualify as "weapons?"  If we are truly going to give Bryce the weaponry he needs, can we say that we have done that with our current roster in the area of TE and RB?

When I mock, I am focused on CB, WR, LB--and many mocks I do not have a RB or TE.

TE:  Last year, Dalton Kincaid, Sam LaPorta, and Luke Musgrave were successful in year 1.  A few others, such as Mayer, Washington, and Schoonmaker disappointed as rookies, but for the most part, first year TEs were successful.   In my view, there is one sure thing at TE in this draft and there is another who should be on the level of Kincaid and LaPorta--TE Sanders from Texas.   If we want to upgrade at TE, we need him, in my view.  Or we should probably start Tremble and hope that his improvement continues.

  • Q: Is there a TE in this draft that will make us better?  Should we continue to bring along Tremble?

RB:  Chubba Hubbard had 900 yards last season, but he averaged a meager 3.8 yards.  Of course, with the new OL, that should improve. Sanders shows us what running behind an outstanding OL can do for your career.  He averaged 3.3 yards per carry and fumbled about once every 65 carries (2 fumbles, 129 carries).  However, before coming to Carolina, Sanders averaged 4.8 yards per carry.   His numbers should improve with the new OL.

  • Do we need a feature RB?  Do we need a bowling ball or a Swiss Army knife?  Can we assume that our RB production will improve with our $150m guards?

OVERARCHING QUESTION:  Is it reasonable to assume that the best "bang for the buck" (players likely to see extensive, meaningful playing time as starters or key rotational players) is to focus on TE, RB, and one more WR?

UNDERARCHING RHETORICAL QUESTION:  Has MHS lost his mind?

You've seen my mocks.  I'm taking a RB with the 4th and a TE in the 5th at the earliest, if at all.  I'm firmly in the Estime and Allen camp for RBs and Wiley and Holker camp for TEs.

I don't think the tag "disappointing" is fair for Schoony and Meyer as rookies. They both had to play beside a volume WR sucking up touches (top 2 in the league in targets).  Schoony was the #2 TE behind Ferguson, so tough to be impactful as a rookie - Mayer barely played till week 5 and got hurt and missed the last 3 games, not to mention playing with a rookie QB.  So once again - context matters alot.

That said I believe there is 1 stud, 1 high potential overpay, and 3 big value TE's in the draft - Bowers may be Kelce so probably worth 1st round value.  Sanders is getting a bit overhyped with his potential so he might go earlier than he should.  I think we should be looking to snag Sinnott, Wiley, or Stover - my preference is Sinnott but Wiley could be there in rounds 4-5 or later and could be well worth it.

RB I definitely think Chubba is underappreciated - again context!  Our OLine was horrendous and he averaged 3.8 Y/A!!!  I mean come on - dude easily lost 0.3 at least on those idiots.  But that said his pass catching and pass blocking were pretty poor most of the year also.  An upgrade would be great, but I tell ya, with the RB market as it is now where I can get Sequan for $12.5M, I am NEVER drafting a RB above round 4 unless he is the next CMC.....just go to the FA market and find some pocket change in your couch and get a top 5 RB.  We just screwed that up with Sanders.  But the guys in the 3-5 round range could be OK....there isn't a top tier RB in this draft IMO.  I would sit it out this year on RB unless you can get a decent guy who falls far.....Sanders and Chubba are likely better then most anything in the draft.
