so I've got to ask.. is it worth it being a fan of this team?

I've been a fan for a long time. I was young the first few seasons but still kept up with the team distantly. Didn't really become a "die-hard" until probably 99/00 or so. 

I have never seen the team go through a rut like this or have this level of hopelessness season to season. I guess this is what some of the other franchises went through. I think we will eventually figure it out, I don't know if that 3, 5, or 10 years from now- but eventually the tide will turn.

It's hard to be a fan right now, and like I have told people:

  • If your mental health can't take the strain, do yourself a favor and just come back later.
  • If you don't have the money don't waste your money on gear, tickets, etc. Do it when you can. 
  • If you have other things that are more important, focus your time and energy on those things, the Panthers will still be here.

There is a very large portion of our fanbase that used to pack BOA stadium that is lying dormant right now because of one of the three points above.

I started to let go when we lost the Super Bowl and checked out for good when Cam left the first time.  Since Tepper took over, this team has done nothing but stink and devoting any time/effort/mental space is a waste.  I own PSL's and haven't been to a game since before Covid.  There's just nothing to be excited about and I don't see that changing until after this season.

I'm just following them out of habit now. I have no emotions in the game anymore.  Stopped having that in 2016. It's only out of morbid curiosity that I still watch the games anymore. I now just want to see how bad it can actually get under this owner. Kinda like watching a train wreck that you just can't look away from. That's all I have left.

Even as a mod, I'm getting close.  

My dad gave up his PSLs he got year 1, finally, this year.  They're not in Charlotte anymore, finally were like its not worth trying to give away half of these that they won't travel in for.  Everyone in my orbit is out of Charlotte minus a select few.  There's not much tying me to the team anymore.  

My parents are both from Chicago, I live in the north shore, my wife & I just had our first (boy), and I'm seriously thinking he'll grow up a Bears fan (I know, not that much better haha).  And I was perusing through some old photos of me as a kid, and realize my dad had me in Bears & Cubs gear all the time.  Moved to Charlotte in 92 as a youngin' and when the team came, the fandom just happened to us all.

Not a big football merch guy, but all I've got left is one Kuechly jersey that I never wear and a carhart Panthers hat that is for hiking/house work.  Times are a changing and honestly, I'm tuning out.  

I dettached from the Hornets about 3 years ago entirely.  This feels eerily similar to when I was just completely dettached emotionally from a fan standpoint.  And it's just football at the end of the day.  I just want to watch some fun games at this point.

These days I consider myself more of a follower than a fan.  There's no point in expressing any passion about this franchise.  I've just been working on my golf game on Sundays.

When it comes to football in general, I delight in watching the greatness of Patrick Mahomes continue to unfold.  I'm really enjoying watching Brady fanboys melt down as Mahomes assaults the record books.

I never watched college football growing up, only NFL. I never rooted for a team because one never represented my state,  SC, only players. I liked Jerry Rice, Barry Sanders, Walton Payton and Emmitt Smith. I considered them to be high character players. This is why I'm a fan of the Carolina Panthers. I won't stop being a fan because we suck and we do absolutely suck. I believe in supporting teams that represent my state much more than choosing a team with a winning record, that's a follower, not a fan...

      Well that's part of where the disconnect is then, you think Chark was a "solid NFL player" I couldn't disagree more, he's someone who had one solid NFL season and then was at best a JAG the rest of his career, I wouldn't call that a "solid NFL player" If he was a #3 WR and put up the stats he did outside of that 1 season, then sure, he's a "solid NFL player" but he put up those numbers as the #1 WR in 3 of his 4 seasons that he had meaningful roles and the #2 in a high powered offense the 4th.   That's not good and not what I'd call a "solid NFL player"

      Everything always makes sense in hindsight. Hell, I've seen guys who were touted by everyone as slam dunk "safest player in the draft" type prospects bust massively. Remember Aaron Curry? Robert Gallery? I'm just never going to say that a prospect is definitely a better NFL player than a solid NFL player. Better as a prospect? Sure, you can always make those arguments. But ultimately it comes down to what you do on Sundays and what you did on Saturdays just isn't relevant when you're talking about who's the better NFL player.

      And that's totally fair to say, but I think it also shows you guys are conflating what I'm saying with thinking I'm saying something like, "T-Mac will 100% have a better NFL career than Chark had" which is a completely different statement and one I'd agree, you can't really say about any NFL player before they've ever taken a snap. Because what I'm saying, is that T-Mac's actual ability and skills right now, are at a higher level than Chark's ever were, it's a completely different statement that is independent of what his NFL output will be. Look at it this way, without even knowing what the rest of Chark's career turned out to be, would anyone seriously say they'd take Chark after the 2019 season over today's T-Mac if they somehow were in a draft and we were deciding between the two?  As even after that season, his potential was never what T-Mac's is right now. Even with those other prospects, I'm sure some of them before their NFL career started, still had more ability and physical talent than Chark had, because again, this is so much less about T-Mac and so much more about Chark.  A bad coach, system, QB, injuries, etc, that derail a WR's career no matter how good they may have been and is much more of the reason they were a bust than their own abilities.   Chark was a tall WR with little WR speed, he was a deep ball threat and wasn't even particularly great at it, he was not that good of an actual WR. If the Jags had another above average WR in 2019, then Chark doesn't get his 1k season that I think people are getting too hung up on in thinking he was some great player in this league.
