Both of those links refer to the same source. https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10135604-2024-nfl-trade-block-big-board-entering-week-3

It's not a rumor, it's a suggestion as stated here:

"Still, the 28-year-old will be a free agent next offseason and could be a valuable trade chip if Carolina continues to flounder.

Receiver-needy teams could use Johnson, who caught 51 passes for 717 yards and five touchdowns as the Pittsburgh Steelers' No. 2 receiver last year. "

They call it a rumor in the headlines, but I was careful to frame it as weak or speculative.  The headline does not call it a suggestion, but that is what it seems to be.  I guess rumors are repeated suggestions or opinions with a supported premise based on facts, data, or logic.

Said it the other day, there is zero reason to keep him at this point

We're not signing him to an extension, he was brought in for someone we were cutting anyways, to give Bryce a better option on the outside, but Bryce sucks anyways and now is on the bench.

If we can get anything for him, we'd be stupid to keep him, we need draft assets, not rental players for the rest of a lost season.

And in reality, I'm also trading Thielen to a contender who could use his sure hands and route running, as again, we need assets and he's not part of our future anyways.

DJ has best WR in the league potential...  reminds me a little of prime AB or Diggs at his peak.  If we've learned nothing else over the last few years is - once you have an asset, you should do everything you can to keep them, because the return is often never going to get you your value back.  We also have a horrible habit of selling low.

I hope this isn't being considered.  Andy is gonna get him the ball.

I agree, lets see if he can preform if so offer him a contract.

I hope he does well because he is cool. Real easy to like.

But very hard to understand. If there weren’t subtitles I wouldn’t understand 66.6% of what he’s saying. Not that that’s a bad thing. Seems like a good, down to earth dude who will do just fine when he’s playing days are done.

Xavier is getting plenty of play with Johnson on the team. You keep a guy like Johnson on the team because you will have another rookie next year.

We've missed out on building a solid roster for so many years we're completely lost on what's in our best interest. Keep a very very good WR while we develop Mingo and XL. We need good players to mentor the younger players help them adjust learning and grow with help instead of having to figure it out on their own

    • This 1000%.  Hey who wants to sign with the guy that couldn't even get his client the guaranteed contract of a 3rd round pick?  Lmao
    • I don't think it's any weird or unique clause, it's the offset language, same thing so many contract disputes are over. It just means that including it, if a player is cut and then signed by another team, the original team would be able to subtract how much they're getting paid by the new team from what they still owe him on their guaranteed money. For example, it's why Russell Wilson signed for the minimum last year with the Steelers as that was included in his Denver contract.  So if he signed with the Steelers for $1 million, he'd get $1 million less from the Broncos, if it was $2 million, he'd get $2 million less, basically he couldn't make any more money than he was already going to make, so you sign for the minimum to not take unnecessary cap room from your new team while giving extra cap room to your old one. The problem with trying to include it in rookie deals is that a team trying to include it, it says they think they don't really believe the player will make it 4 years with the team before they cut them.  And this usually comes up with one or two rookies in most seasons, the difference is it's usually handled much more quietly and not as public and ugly as this one. The other difference is that it's happening with the Bengals, which I believe I saw are one of the few (or only?) team that doesn't have protections for rookies in rookie and mini camps to be able to participate even if they haven't signed their contract yet.  The other teams have injury protections that allow them to still play, but the Bengals do not, which is also why this one is so public and ugly, as most the time this happens, the rookie is still participating in the rookie and subsequent mini camps, giving them more time to get the contract done before training camp when they'd then hold out.
