Slow being a relative term, I think it's applicable. He's quicker than fast and can get that separation getting into and out of his breaks. He's not a threat to just run past anyone.

He ran past two Bucs DBs on his 40 yard td catch

I don’t know what those two guys were doing and the Bucs had a lot of people from the stands in the secondary yesterday.

I'll go back and watch the coaches film, I'm curious. I was only halfway paying attention by that point yesterday. My point is that if you were to just run every WR in the NFL in a straight line for 40-50 yards AT woud finish in the bottom half. I may be wrong, but flat out speed was never his game anyway. He's a route technician who has great quickness and lateral agility and burst. I hope he can teach XL how to catch!

 

EDIT - upon watching the replay it looks to me like the safety and CB were surprised, both got late breaks. Coker ran an out and AT gave a very subtle move. I would bet they were expecting Coker to go long and AT run an in or a comeback. If you look at their stances, body position and eyes, it sure looks like they were shocked that AT went deep.

He is older now but ran a 4.45 out of college.

Theilen can run any route and is almost automatic on 3rd downs. He may not be as fast as he once was but he is still as shifty and twice as savvy. Unfortunately, he's our only go to guy and every team knows it. My hope is that Coker steps up to be that guy and give Theilen a break. Having both on the field together is an advantage it seems but it's running them into the ground. Still waiting XL catch something over 10 yards that he doesn't unnecessarily jump up in the air to body catch only to drop anyway.

You do realize Thielen barely averages 10 yards per catch over the last 4 years... right?  

And I wouldn't call Evans a YAC guy either, although certainly more capable of it than Thielen.

I think it might've been Smitty that said this recently but one of the things about getting old (for the league anyways) as a receiver is that you really have to work on our craft in order to continue being effective. This is where Thielen is at this juncture, not having that same athleticism he once had. What I see is him doing the little things to effectively dangle a carrot to get defenders thinking he'll do one thing and then catch them by surprise doing something else, effectively making himself open.

For example, on that first TD to Thielen, definitely looked like he was starting an in route. Young climbs the pocket. Safety bites on the route to cut it off or even get an interception. But right at the same time, Thielen switches from the in and goes right for the end zone. This could've been by design, but could've also been him being ultra savvy and hoping his QB sees him. Either way, the timing of everything was excellent and the result was borderline filthy. Quality tape material that XL/Coker should be watching.

So he averages a first down per catch?  Pretty solid. Nobody is confusing him with Randy Moss.  He's better than he's gets credit for, especially as a Panther. It wasn't so long ago I remember people being excited for him coming here. Now he's just some old, slow, washed up white dude.  How the tune has changed.

13.3 this year. Ahead of many other top receivers.

I'm not sure the ypc has much of anything to do with Thielen though.
