Wondering about this group, specifically WASH.  He had veteran free agents who were healthy, after the Brown Injury:

From what I remember, Wash has a pretty good reputation. I think he's even been a coordinator before.

I'd have to look him up again to be certain but that's how I remember it.

Love this decision, Can’t make a mountain from a mole hill but it seems a lot on here think you can.  With what he was given as far as personnel I think he did a great job and look forward to seeing what he can do when we get some talent on that side of the ball.

Also, the very opposite of what the Panthers organization is known for for right now,  much needed stability!

Detroit is working with a bunch of scrubs and they were fine. Sometimes it can be the players and coaching.

their offense is other worldly.  Im sure that has helped that defense.  they sure dont trust their D with them going for it all the time late, lets put it that way.

To be clear I don't think Evero is a bad coach and he could certainly have a big turnaround coinciding with us adding a great deal more defensive talent but I just can't shake the feeling this marriage has ran it's course.

There is no DC that would even field a top 25 defense with a starting 11 including players such as LaBryan Ray, Shy Tuttle, A'Shawn Robinson, Jacoby Windmon, Josey Jewell, Jordan Fuller.

Evero was considered a top 5 DC before the season. Canales made the right call.

Thomas Brown was once considered a top 5 coaching candidate as well. Sometimes the hype is just bs. Results tell the truth.

I just hate his scheme and lack of adjustments

I dont doubt he can coach when he has his players for his scheme but honestly I don't like his scheme. I want an aggressive attacking style with press man and blitzing up the run gaps. You can run it with a 3-4 or a 4-3  like LeBeau for Pittsburgh or Jim Johnson style for the Eagles. I hate the bend until you break rush 4 crap Evero used all year. I guess I will cling to the notion that so many injuries made him keep things simple and fail to change or adapt rather than he gave up.

His scheme is entirely designed around making a decent overall defense with not great players.  It's a safe bend but don't break scheme.  I think if he had an elite talented defense it would be the same it would just underperform instead of overperforming with bad players.  I have no idea you would rebuild a defense getting players to build around that scheme.

Get the man some talent to work with

This ranking doesn't tell the whole story though. Opposing teams had short fields to work with and could do whatever they wanted on offense because the Panthers simply couldn't stop them. Look at how many TDs the defense gave up. Only three or four teams gave up more that season. That's why EE should have been let go instead of retained, well, also because he wanted to leave.

A lot of the NFL coaching carousel is finding out whether guys who are really good at one skill set can also be good at another.

You wind up learning that some guys are just always gonna be better off as coordinators or position coaches.

    • No one knows who the jags or jets are going to pick. Each have been link to about 10 different players and need each one of them.
    • My concern with Walker is that he's small, he's not a true edge but he's also not a MLB either.  He's a tweener that very well could turn him into a great player, but I just don't love the idea of taking a player like that, with one season of collegiate production, at #8. If he's not a true edge rusher and he's sure as hell not a Kuechly, taking him at 8 just doesn't make sense to me, no matter how much you like the person/player.  Just feels like he's Chinn situation all over again, except not a S/LB hybrid, but a LB/DE hybrid this time. He seems like a 3-4 OLB who will split his time rushing the passer and dropping back, which sure, while that can be a valuable player to have, I'd rather be taking someone with more of a defined position regardless of base alignment. I don't think we're going to stick with Evero for the long term, whether he leaves on his own or we go a different way.  And once that happens, if/when we move back to a 4-3, a player like Walker is going to struggle even more as he really won't be a great fit for any specific position in that alignment as he's not a 4-3 OLB and he's not big enough to be a full time DE in that alignment either.
