Bryce Contract Extension - Hypothetical

I would make Young play out his rookie contract, If he continues to play well then use the 5th year option. If he plays at a high level for the next 3 years, I would give him a contract then. He's got a lot to prove before getting a huge payday.

IF the Panthers front office feels Bryce is the future, of course it makes sense to lock him in for longer and cheaper.

Why would they panic after the first two seasons when there's another two left for them to build value? Why would the team get out of the already affordable rookie contract just to lock it down?

First off, he's not even eligible for a contract yet.  You have to play three years.

And thank goodness!

All we saw last year were glimpses.  Yes, those glimpses were enough that I think every fan wants to see him come back next year.  But bottom line is that so far, with only a couple games worth of exceptions, he hasn't yet shown that he's a FRANCHISE QB.  He hasn't shown the consistent ability to elevate the players around him.

He could be the guy.  After week two of this year, just saying that much is a massive, massive positive swing.  But let's see him put it together for 17 games.  Let's see him make the people around him BETTER.  Then we can talk about extending him.

Let's not lose sight of the fact that thus far in his career, in no season has BY exceeded the rookie stats of MAC JONES.

We should  be excited for the possibility, but we certainly haven't seen yet what we need to see to declare we have our guy.

Jumping the gun by a mile this would be like extending a wr who has a 100 yard game or a rb with 100 yard game.  Bryce has had what 2 300 yard games in 2 years.  His horrific games outweigh his ok games and he has had like 4 good games.  This year is big for him and the panthers.

An incentive based, non-guaranteed contract makes the most sense for the situation but it would make cap management a pain and Bryce might prefer to just test the market when the time comes. In short: it's too soon.

This is the head coach's job, not the quarterback's. Bryce can't go in the defensive huddle and remind Chandler Wooten to wrap up when he's tackling a running back. And offensively, what can he do that makes Hubbard, Thielen, Coker or an offensive lineman better? His performance is all I'm thinking about when considering a contract extension.

This isn't a good year to waste a third round draft pick on a 3rd string QB. That would be an incredibly foolish decision.
