Question regarding the possible lockout

Assuming that there will be a lockout after this season, would the team go ahead hire a head coach (assuming Fox won't return or is not retained) knowing that there will not be any football played for the season?

I suspect they will hire one because honestly the lockout will likely not last beyond the preseason. They might hire from within like Tampa did though for a year to bridge the gap until they find who they want.

It's hard in this economy for players that make millions demanding more money and regular folks cant even find a 40k job . Hard to feel bad for the players but if they strike fug it.....The Replacements was a good movie.

Let me also say if they make it a 18 game season they should increase base pay and increase the 53 man roster to 56 or 58.

now c'mon Lucky Dog, a million dollars just doesn't get what it use to. some players might actually have to get a job, or use they're degree post football.

A lockout is NOT a strike. There will be no football because the owners will shut down the facilities and can not hire replacements. There are labor & contract laws. Please get it right. :crazy:

IMO they will not hire a coach from outside ... why pay someone to coach when there is no football. Most if not all the coaches will not even be under contract (our WR & ST coaches were signed to 1 year deals) so they will have slim pickings for an interim coach.

While the owners have opted out of the current CBA, the drop dead date is March 1, 2011. It is at this point the owners will likely announce their intentions to lock out the players.

The players union is in the process of decertifying team by team as we speak. What this means is the players are actually voting to kill their union heading into a lockout for one single reason. Without a certified union, the players can then individually or as a class action file lawsuits against the teams that lock them out.

While decertifying would allow players to sue it also would give alot more power to the owners. The players wont have the CBA to fall back on the owners would sign players to lower contracts. Would be interesting to see this play out this way. Players without contracts next year will be screwed Im sure the owners will have to honor the other contracts and let them play but new contracts would look alot different. I understand this is just a move for the lockout but the Department of Labor might not intercede on the players half this time. Im also sure that if it fails the players will vote the union back in.

It's easier to feel sorry for the players compared to the owners. The owners will get paid during the lockout. Paid well.

The players will not. Which is not a big deal for say Payton Manning. But it is a huge deal for a practice squad guy or a minimum salary guy who only has a few shots to make an impression. Or an older guy who has only 1 or 2 years left

Take a rookie making $285,000. Done nothing but think football all his life. Believes that he can work his way up to starting in a year or two.

But now he is looking at a full year of $0 and his career is in jeopardy.

When you add in the fact that a players average career is 3.5 years and you will probably get injured. Maybe a few concussions so your brain is in a cloud all the time. And you are the product on the field.

      It is a tough decision.  There is another factor.  Is he in game shape?  A tired Hunt is not better than an "in-shape" Corbett.  When coming off an injury, it is natural to want to protect the injured area, even if it is completely healed.  This can cause you to contort your body for no reason, lose fundamentals, and it could lead to other injuries.  For example, I had a knee in high school that required getting taped.  That made me aware of the knee (not used to tape on my knee) and I pulled my groin (favoring or dragging the leg with the tape).  The trainer explained the groin injury the way I do here--but scared money makes no money.  If he is cleared to play, he is cleared to play.  Watch him, rotate him in for a series, etc.  Specifically, I would want to watch the matchup--who is winning more--Corbett or Hunt?  How is the defense reacting (if at all) to Hunt being in?  Etc.

      Shannon was sued for $50 million (settled out of court, I believe) for forcing sex on his girlfriend during a two-year relationship.  He denies it, but ESPN let him go last April.  Chad Johnson's wife filed a police report because he head-butted her in a car and was put on probation. I had to google it.  I watched the Ray Rice video and when you see it, you realize just how vile and cowardly abusing a woman really is.  But for the same point Aussie tried to make, these women are defenseless, and being phyiscally bigger and stronger does not validate your actions.   I can't even stand to watch Steve Smith.  I can't normalize this kind of behavior--again, I do not think R-P had that in mind when he posted this.  When the reason was exposed, we should realize that we are talking life (quality of) and death (in some cases) here.

      I can respect the fact that we should not glorify or normalize men who have a history of beating women.  I do not think anyone was thinking of that when they posted this, but if head-butting your wife and unconsensual sex (rape) is something you cannot overlook, I agree with that.  I think they are both half-crazed attention hounds regardless of their pasts.
