Clowney released

Y'all forgetting about Maz Mwansa.

He would be the fifth DE IF the cut Barno and DJ Johnson.  He would not cost us a roster spot--and that is the key.

"Carolina’s pass rush is being reshaped under new outside linebackers coach AC Carter, and recent addition Patrick Jones II. While Mwansa won’t count against the active roster thanks to the IPP slot, his upside is significant. He’s been likened physically to Eagles pass rusher Nolan Smith Jr. and already shows flashes of edge-bending potential.

Panthers Director of Player Personnel Cole Spencer summed it up: “Anytime you get a raw ball of clay like that, and the league affords a roster spot, it’s pretty cool.”

could be--I read several articles about him.  This is not a foreign relations project--they think they have a rough gem here.  Would that not be awesome?  In my mind, edge is set.  Barno and Johnson are history.  That roster spot savings for a fifth DE is huge.  It means we can add a guy somewhere else.

not sure how i feel about this. kind of sad but also kind of "meh..."

defense will be better this year with or without him. not a make or break presence on the roster.

Banking on a rotational player to step up.

Hope he does well here.

That's what Clowney is at this point and this guy is younger with the potential to further develop while Clowney achieved a very disappointing peak for his hype and #1 overall pick status and is on the decline.

The other potentially newsworthy item from the article...

Love this because it eliminates any chance of rushing him back too soon, let him fully rest up and hopefully we have a diamond in the rough being added to the 2026 team.

My one question is why does this mean he'll miss the full season already though?

I thought players get put on the PUP list going into camp all the time without it officially ending their season, why is this different?

I think they have already decided to keep him out this year.  After last year they are going to take their time, which I agree with you on it being the right call.  Try to save anything we can from this pick...

6-2 230--so he will probably add 15 lbs of muscle--he has bend, natural speed, and is still learning-at combines (not NFL--CFL and one down in Florida, I think) he blew away the competition at Edge.  I think I read that he has already been given #96--so our five Edge players are in the barn.

Hate it based on not a single vet edge.

Another tough year for our DC.

As always guys will come available that no one expects as other teams go through their cuts too. I think we'll pick up a cheaper vet edge later in the summer.

I'd have liked to just keep Clowney but I get the reasoning behind cutting him and I don't think it's gonna hurt the team much at all.

Yea, I'm not questioning why they are doing it, that I totally get and agree with.

I was asking why does putting him on the PUP list now, mean his season is over.  As I thought players often start camp on the PUP list when they are rehabbing an injury, but they're allowed to come off of it later.

    • The term you're looking for is "malinger(ed)", and he didn't.  I'm not sure why Panthers fans act like jaded ex girlfriends.  The dude is clearly injury prone as his time in San Fransico also proves. It's not like he got to San Fran and stopped having problems.
    • My long and rambling post:   The guy is all heart, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back even better next year. He’s exactly the guy you lock up. The money won’t ever change the way he plays.  It was a big fumble, but what 1,000 yard back fumbles once in an entire season?  Pride. This team is FINALLY seeing guys who obviously take the game very seriously. Hunt, Chuba, Thielen, Brown, Horn (CB), Coker, Bryce (IMHO). Bye bye, Spider-Man. I don’t see these dudes being OK with teammates half-assing practice or in games. I can see Brown and Horn coming over to talk to somebody.  Good team? Ummm, maybe, but will still likely lose more close games than they win unless this last draft turns in to LOB part 2. That’s a stretch.  Pretty good/decent team. Yes. They finished the season as a pretty good team. I know I sound like a broken record harping back to it, but going in to ATL and putting a 40 burger on them en route to an OT win. A bad Panthers team would have had their brakes beaten off. We’ve seen it.  Rose colored glasses on and bonging a 40 of hopium: There are watershed moments that occur that change the course of franchises, both good and bad. If Fox doesn’t pull Rodney at halftime, the epic journey that was 2003 never happens. On the negative side, Cam taking that one hit from Watt was the end of any and all Panthers relevancy and we’ve been the biggest losers in all of pro sports as a result. Watershed moments. LOB draft. Vinny goes down and the goat is born.  Will the ATL game be the spark that this franchise has desperately needed? Could it be that they hit the mega million jackpot with Princley and Scourton as eat QBs for breakfast? Sure would be nice having 2 all-pro edge guys on the cheap for the next 4 years.  A lot of unknowns, but at least it actually feels  fun again.
    • Ok LT and Petersen are a cut above everyone else to me cmc and Faulk are interchangeable on this list.  though Faulk was better career wise
