REPORT: Coach Dave Canales was displeased with Jalen Coker's level of physical conditioning this offseason

Recommended Posts

Panthers head coach Dave Canales was reportedly displeased with Jalen Coker's conditioning and body composition during the offseason, which resulted in the team assigning the wide receiver a detailed summer fitness program.
According to an August 30, 2025, article in The Athletic by Joseph Person and Jayna Bardahl, the team was concerned about Coker's conditioning issues and a related quad injury.
Key details from The Athletic's reporting:
  • Offseason program: Coker received a specific fitness regimen to follow in Charlotte during the summer. This resulted from Canales' concerns regarding his conditioning and body composition.
  • Recurring injury: The quad strain Coker experienced is reportedly the same one that sidelined him for three games during his rookie season in 2024.
  • Availability concerns: Coker's ongoing injury issues raise concerns about his ability to stay on the field. Availability is a critical factor for the team.
  • Coker's response: In an August 9 interview with Panthers.com, Coker acknowledged the team's collective effort to help him with his offseason plan. He stated he worked closely with the athletic staff in Charlotte, focusing on a day-by-day calendar to manage his workload and prevent soft-tissue injuries.
  • Training camp improvements: Canales praised Coker in early August for returning a "different athlete" after working on his "transition, his speed, his body [composition]".
  • Back on injured reserve: Coker was placed on injured reserve on August 30, 2025, due to another quad injury. This forced him to miss at least the first four games of the 2025 regular season and led the team to re-sign veteran Hunter Renfrow.

NFL reporting is becoming Premier League-level in terms of gossip.

it has morphed into WWE/soap male drama. I swear Im at my end following it. The booze ads into gambling and "message" BS has drained my remaining tank. I just follow the Panthers and quit the other 31 teams.

    • I think they just needed a couple weeks to figure out a RB.   You can’t play good SEC teams and just run the Clemson pass attack all game long.   Cade sort of setup to fail there.   Cade isn’t Watson or Lawerence.  Miles better than DJU.   Cade probably in the Taj Boyd tier for me.  Both can/could really play well….it just rarely was in the big game (Cade did play well in that playoff game but outside of that he seems to panic a bit in the bigger ones) I like Sellars.  I talk mad poo about the Gamecocks but that’s just for giggles.  My people are Gamecocks.   Family played football there too.  They can win every game but 1 each year as far as I am concerned
    • what about the that bomb VT threw to #0 after that SC ruling.  That should have been a catch? It was to the sideline and he didn’t control it to the ground….he fell out of bounds?  it does get logically weird to have to control it to the ground if you aren’t out of bounds….but don’t if you are out of bounds or in the endzone.    I think you either leave the rule as is or you have to say the ground can’t cause an incompletion.   If given those two choices, the flawed first is better I think.   whatever the rules are…teams are going to feel screwed I would think
    • Ngl seeing them land LaNorris after suffering through DJU hurts. I have never been impressed with Cade either, but am hoping he can win me over this season.
