I don't think it's a stunting because if they have the abilities, they aren't magically going to lose them due to lack of game opportunities. Were that the case, backup players would be utterly useless as they just sit and watch.

XL's lack of development is solely of his own doing.

I don't doubt that any WR is going to be happier with more opportunities but I also don't think Winston(or anyone else, for that matter) is suddenly going to transform our entire offense into 40-50 passes a game. I will say it's possible and given the player you are talking about that certainly might have to be an option more often than not but that doesn't really seem to fit Canales style in general.

Most backup players you didn't draft in the first round and/or are expecting them to be your long term starters.

You need in game reps to grow your game and these guys aren't getting NFL level in game reps with Bryce at QB, I don't know how anyone can honestly think we aren't stunting their growth so far.

And yes, I agree some of XL's issues are things he needs to work out on his own to improve his catching and mental side of the game, but he still needs a real life NFL QB throwing him the ball or he'll never improve, no matter what he does on his own.

I agree with this and said as much in the "QB trade" thread last night.  However, I think Jameis is the one exception to this rule, especially if we can get him for a 5th or later pick TWO drafts from now.

To me, that cost is MORE than worth the return we'll get in the form of expediting the growth of our pass catchers.

But literally any other available backup QB in the league and anything other than a pick TWO drafts from now, and I probably then balk at a trade like that.

I just don’t get what you all see in jameis. He’s a backup.

You’d literally be running an nfl blitz offense.

the only thing you want him throwing is PA da bomb flip

you mean... the only thing you want him throwing is air as he fakes a pass after handing off to Rico...

Dude should never, ever be throwing a pass.

So when he struggles after he comes back because he's still not 100%, the fans and team will make excuses for him because of that and it will be the reason we give him another year as our starting QB.

Perfect.

FML.

Bro, he's getting another year whether you like it or not.  It will be the '26 offseason before any long term decision is made on Bryce.  The only thing that may get decided this offseason is concerning his 5th year option.

I mean, odds are we're going to lose this game regardless.

Exactly. This team cannot win a shootout with the Bills. Josh will get his on our defense. We just have to limit his time on the field. That's going to rely on our run game. If Andy throws multiple picks we do not have a chance.

He's a backup because he constantly loses games for his teams with his turnovers.  I don't want him for what he can do and a QB, I want him because of what he can do for our WRs and TEs.

Bryce started 12 games last year and had 2,400 yards passing with 15 TDs.

Jameis started 7 games last year and had 2,120 yards passing with 13 TDs.

Bryce has started 7 games this year and has 1,288 yards passing with 11 TDs.

If you don't see what Jameis, even with all his faults, can bring to this team because of his very live arm, then you're fooling yourself or just don't want to see it.

Well DJ Moore had a parade of mediocre to bad QB's after Cam's arm died. Did his budding career suddenly go to poo?

I think you are fairly dramatically overrating the idea that development for a WR hinges on "certain types of throws."

That's really a very minimal thing versus the bigger issue(IMO) of just having resources that are largely being squandered to the detriment of your overall offense. Bryce's lack of success pushing the ball deep absolutely creates that.

But those ills aren't going to be solved by just bringing in a guy that consistently puts you in huge holes with crazy TO's.

Getting a functionally BETTER QB will solve almost all the issues with the passing game. Unfortunately, that's just gonna be a tough ask during the season. That's really an offseason fix and we just didn't choose to do that this past offseason. We are now reaping that.

    • This play was never designed to go to either DJ or Odunze. The primary read is Burden who is stymied early, with the outlet being Kmet if Caleb doesn't like the option for Burden. Given the situation it's pretty obvious the simple play is to take the free yards with Kmet, or if you want to be aggressive just wait a beat longer for Burden to uncover on his double move. If Moore was ever going to be a viable target in this play then Caleb should have started out reading Odunze to hold the safety in the middle and then coming to Moore, but because he started the snap staring down the right and then came back to the middle late it made it where the safety's leverage remained to the outside of Moore, so he would never have imagined that pass actually being thrown to him in that situation. Realistically DJ's best option in that context is to just occupy the safety to leave a hole open for Caleb to get it to Burden, which is probably why he throttles down vs carrying the safety across.
    • Even with Sonny Styles still on the board I thought it's a no brainer to address the Oline after Icky's injury.  And how can you pass up Fano at 19 given our situation. Then the rest of the draft just kind of made sense with maybe the exception of Klubnik.  But if Canales can fix him and Young goes down. . .I think it's a solid pick. What do you think of this draft?
    • When we didn't trade him to the Rams or the Bears (I believe the Bears said they would take one of Brown/ Burns/DJ Moore) we should have just signed him and kept him.  We should have traded him to the Rams obviously and we should have kept DJ and traded Burns.  We made all three wrong choices with Burns lol.
