Just about everyone I have ever seen that was a first time HC, mostly successful coordinators, said there was stuff they couldn’t have imagined. 
Canales only had one season as a coordinator. A steep learning curve should be expected. Help in the form of a mentor would have been a good idea.

He has former head coaches on staff. Capers and Caldwell

It's not just about being cheaper. Dalton was washed last year. So saying who's better is just a lame argument because it's not even trying to do anything. Who was available?

Or we could have tried to trade for Howell, who though he played badly his one season starting in Washington was behind a sieve of an offensive line with no running game. 

There were options. We didnt have to go with Dalton, but he was comfortable and no challenge to Bryce or a threat to the starting job which is what I think Tepper ultimately wanted. 

Even if we didnt get better than Dalton, judging by what we saw Sunday, would it have been much worse? So we lose by 40 instead of 30.

I wasn't a fan of the Canales hire, but the Panthers didn't exactly have people lining up to coach this dumpster fire under Tepper.  I think Canales is doing a decent job with a talent depleted roster and not much cap room.  It is pretty crazy how many rookies and 2nd year players that have key roles with this team.

I’m all for giving Dave more time for roster maturation and whatnot, but he has already shown me he’s more rah-rah and less nutsack. 
 

If being liked and being fair to the players matters more than holding guys accountable and not fuging with what’s working, then he could still screw us up even with pro bowl talent everywhere. 
 

Gus Fring said it best “never make the same mistake twice”

Dave Canales just feels like a guy marking time.
He’s not a “bust your ass and chase perfection” Landry type, and he’s not a “you’re a good man, now let’s find your best self” Rivera type either. He doesn’t inspire greatness, but he doesn’t tolerate outright laziness either.

He’s basically football’s version of middle management, competent, steady, and fine at keeping things from collapsing, but not the kind of leader who changes a culture or puts a team on his back. You get the sense ownership hired him to keep the lights on while they figure out what’s next.

In short, he’s not the problem… but he’s never going to be the solution either.

Aren’t there two former HCs on staff, Capers and the former WF…Lions HC

      Darrell Jackson would be a fantastic pickup for us, I think he could replace 80% of what A’Shawn gave us last year. With more passing rush upside going forward in the future, I’m a big proponent of large framed defensive tackles. Pairing Derrick Brown with another 6’5 35inch arm length DT would be so fun to watch. Let’s continue being huge in the middle, allow our linebackers to flow to the ball uninterrupted.

      I agree with you on the pick of Thienemen in the first. I think he will still be there and he's a smart, fast and sturdy player. He's who we need back there. In the second, I like Rodriguez over Golday. I agree that off the ball linebackers are desperately needed here, even with our great FA pick up. I think with our third pick, we're going to dip into OT territory instead of the D-line. While I agree that we need another disruptor at the point of attack that is stout enough to just stonewall a center and a guard at the same time, we've got a shaky and expensive O-line at the present that is just about to age out of the game. I think we snag Blake Miller out of Clemson here and give him a year behind Moton to learn and put some weight and strength on. He can also jump right in and play right guard at any time. Also, and this might sound crazy, but anyone who has put up with multiple seasons at Clemson will be able to take the heat and humidity of training camp at the start of the season and early games against the NFCSouth.  Beyond that, your guess is as good as mine. We do need that QB for competition and realistically to study for back-up. Luke Altmyer out of Illinois seems to fit the mold of the point guard type QB that they want from Bryce. That'd make an apples to apples situation that could make coaching and game planning easy. On the other hand North Dakota State's Cole Payton could be an intriguing choice as well as a big dual threat guy. Both could be there for our fourth pick or both could be gone. Will QBs continue to slide this season like last? Who knows?
