Just about everyone I have ever seen that was a first time HC, mostly successful coordinators, said there was stuff they couldn’t have imagined. 
Canales only had one season as a coordinator. A steep learning curve should be expected. Help in the form of a mentor would have been a good idea.

it isn't like he doesn't see Dalton everyday for  the past 2 years 

Who was there to be had that is CHEAPER, AND ALSO BETTER than Dalton...

He has former head coaches on staff. Capers and Caldwell
