XL is a bust

I see enough good from XL that I’m withholding judgment.  TBH, the same excuse applies for him that applies for Tet and the others.  If you have a QB who is constantly misplacing the ball in shitty spots, as a receiver, you start playing different.  If you run a route and look back for the ball in anticipation, and you’re used to it being in a shitty spot from your shitty QB, but THIS time it’s placed better, now you’re not prepared for it.   know it sounds stupid, but it’s the truth.  Most of the throws on game day are dropped because they’re looking for a better ball and it’s not thrown well.  But there are times, like the play you posted, where the placement is better than they anticipate, and it throws them off.  And I emphasize placed “better” because that’s still not a great pass.  The thing with Bryce is, as I mentioned in another thread where our conversation turned to Jake in his heyday, is in comparison to other QBs, Bryce just doesn’t give his receivers a chance to make a play.  At all.  So until we get a QB who consistently can, I’m not evaluating any of these guys.  If we had a real QB, Tet would be putting up Prime Mike Evans numbers right now.

Sucks we drafted him to literally out athletic people and go get balls like that…. And he doesn’t even try. What a waste of a pick

That was a very technical catch and we've already discussed that he's raw as a WR.

Early in his career, while he's developing, he's meant to get the ball on jet sweeps, drags, slants etc - i.e. extended handoffs.

He's already shown he can take the top off a defence and he can make difficult catches. He wasn't worth the 1st round pick, but there's clearly a lot of talent there.

I don’t care about that. There was zero effort on that play he didn’t even try to catch it.

You are exactly correct with everything but your first sentence. Turning your shoulders and high pointing the ball isn’t technical. He should be doing sweeps, drags, jet sweeps, and go routes. His body is his only plus attribute. If he can’t out physical smaller DBs he can’t play in this league. They are better than him everywhere else.

How about a lower pick?  Ladd.

High day two is a "higher pick." I started a thread maybe three or four weeks ago and it was basically based upon Ladd, X and how we drafted the wrong guy. So, yes Ladd was actually a "lower pick" than X (but still a high second round pick), but not only was he the more polished route runner, he was just as fast, but quicker on his feet and simply more fluid, but also had better hands. Perhaps the worst thing is that he was better suited for Bryce. I was open to X at the time because I knew we were perhaps swinging that way, but, as a Georgia alum, if I were picking of course I would've picked Ladd. He was really always my first choice. I think he was a legit first round talent. Turns out, he may have been the best one (and that's just not the homer in me). Some will call it hindsight, but if you look at it critically, there was no way the likes of X, Xavier Worthy, Keon Coleman or A.D. Mitchell should've been in the discussion with him. It just goes to show, like with QBs there are legit options at receiver on day two on the regular.

I just don’t agree.  A young capable QB would be killing with this supporting cast.  Bryce fugs up the entire offense.  Every play is a stacked box, secondary cheating underneath and jumping everything because they know his chances of beating them with a pass over the top is lottery level odds.

XL has without a doubt had his share of bad moments. But you cannot understate how awful many of these passes are and even the ones that have been better have often been poorly placed. Throws to the sideline and throws to the back of the end zone are basically off the table as passes just sail over the receivers head. Defenses have all of this on tape. It makes their job easier. Until we get an adequate passer in here who can open the entire field we cannot fully evaluate the moving parts of this offense.

    • Either way there's some tough teams on the schedule this year, on paper anyways.
    • Same. I would prefer a MNF game earlier in the season. As if more likely has some significance in case things go south this season. If we perform well enough we could even get another game forced to a Sunday night spot later in the season.
    • Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
