ESPN guys talk Bryce fifth year option

Honestly if Bryce wasn’t so bad for 2-3 quarters every game this would be a no brainer.

Listening to post game commentary from players (Chuba and Ickey) they both said that Bryce was the key factor in the comeback and they all trusted and looked to him at the end of games to make a play. Kind of reminds me of another quarterback who was stuck behind Aaron Brooks in NO until we picked him up that always stepped up when the game mattered to make a play.

5-1 in one score games. The lone loss was the only game where Bryce didn’t make plays down the stretch to win it (and it was ugly). Whether you like it or not if we are within one score in the fourth then we have a chance with Bryce under center.

0 issue picking up the 5th year. It’s critical that we do, in case he continues to build and get better each season. It would be insane to talk extension this offseason though. Pick up the 5th year option, and if he shows consistency, do an extension after year 4. It’s as easy as that, this is not an issue of having to pay a lot more if we make a mistake, it’s all risk no reward to even think of an extension after this season based on the constancy shown through three seasons.

I'm OK with keeping Young ONLY if we bring some other guys into the QB room to compete with him for the starting spot.

Was literally about to say exactly this.

I have absolutely no problem with this if we actually bring in legit competition (either by FA or draft).

We're probably keeping him next year and moving forward with the 5th year option.  I really don't see "Competition" with Bryce happening, but I can see us targeting a 4th-7th rounder to compete with a shltty vet for the backup spot.

The options just aren't there.

Same...

"Competition" could potentially become an option the following season if he has a down year four. Next year? Kinda doubt it.

Better backup? Si

Competition? Nein

Shitty vet is the competition.

God if only anyone could have seen this coming last year and brought in real camp competition this off season. If only this were foreseeable. Right now I think we are in the driver's seat in the NFCS if Brissett had been brought in instead of Dalton. JMO, but for 2m more per season a legit NFL backup who given the opportunity has shown he can throw the ball this season and would have competed for the starting job this year.

It feels like this off season we're going to make the dumbest decision no matter what so I fully expect the ghost of QBs past and Jack Plummer back at training camp.

It makes sense (even though I don't think Bryce is the answer). Bring in competition next year for him and if he sucks, then you trade him to another team who will have him for his 5th year to try and make him a reclamation project

If anything it will give them time to find his replacement. If they had done that last offseason they would be in much better position to move on. But as you've saw the option behind him is going to take some time to make it right.

For better or worse the decision makers including Dan Morgan are and will remain heavily invested in salvaging the trade and selection. To that end it is best to expect them to make bad decisions.

I don't necessarily buy that. Hell, I'd be calling for their firing if I did.

As hard as it might be to believe though, I do think our braintrust genuinely sees a possible future where we genuinely keep winning with Bryce.

That's not my vision, but it legitimately could be theirs.

    • With the contract money an OT first rounder makes you can ALWAYS get a new girlfriend.  And probably an upgrade at that.  You only got 2 parents.
    • Brother. You are wholly confusing comparing situations and applying actual standards like most other franchises do like simply getting into a playoff series and winning at least 1 or 2 series games with praising. Nobody is praising the Hawks. Nobody is praising the Magic. Nobody here likes those teams. But reality is reality. The Hawks like other franchises have traded players fired coaches etc but they can still win a couple playoff games. How is that not the bare floor for you or anyone else? What are we doing here if it isn't? We've seen eye to eye on many things over the years. But you are in the camp on the Hornets where you are emotionally attached to LaMelo where you feel the need to carry his water like he's got that juice. That's cool that you feel that way. It's your prerogative. But I differ from that viewpoint entirely. If he had that juice we would not have gotten wiped off the court in 2 play in games with 2 different coaching staffs and rosters. if people don't like hearing that well I'm sorry but how the hell is this team ever going to get better and ultimately go anywhere in the postseason if we just blindly pat them on the back for getting their asses whooped before they actually even get into the real playoffs? There seem to be some Bryce Young level standards being applied here. That's wild to me. But to each his own.
    • Proctor/Freeling were always the belles of the ball where we were picking. What those two *could* become at OT was far greater than what others could be at their respective positions and I’m glad our FO could see that.
