We know what Jameis, Howell and Minshew are - not a long term option at all.

Davis Mills is interesting but such a small sample size.  Even Kyle Allen had a nice run of games once upon a time.  There's no proven commodity for starting level QB you can build around.  Malik Willis is the only one I would try to bring in for legitimate competition but he'll probably want to be a guaranteed starter somewhere else this offseason.

I just listed 4 QBs that are better than Young that are making less, combined, than his 5th year option.

This year we have the chance to go out and sign Howell, Lance, Minshew and Willis. We of course won't because we don't want to hurt Bryce's feelings.

"Still an option" gives me hope that that is just GM speak. Doesn't make me confident that they will

It is.  Dan and Brandt have shown that they are prudent.   He's not just going to say "No, we don't discuss a deal".  Agents and players wouldn't like that.

There is no reason to rush a contract.   See how next year plays out and then make your decision.

There's been several reports that this would happen for quite a while now. Oddly high amount of people acting surprised about it on social media.

If anything this shows that they aren't confident enough to give him a big contract yet and they want him to  put togethet a consistently good or great season

You don't give a qb that struggles to get above 200 yards and 1 TD most of his games a big ass contract.

You only give a huge contact quickly to QBs that you know are that dude. Burrow got his after 2.5 seasons of play essentially,  Mahomes got his after only 2 seasons starting. Bryce is nowhere near their level.

The 5th year option is guaranteed for injury only, so unless he gets hurt he can still be released/traded with no cap implications. Not really that much risk there. But barring a true breakout year next year, if Bryce is starting for us in his 5th year I will be extremely disappointed with this team. His limitations are just way too significant to overcome in the NFL.

They haven't accepted that he is a backup QB yet.

Surely we will. I don't think Willis will be on that list though. I think he's going to be looking for an opportunity to definitely compete for a starting job. Signing here, I don't think you're competing for a starting job through camp and preseason. I think you're relying on Bryce faltering again which is very possible but I think Willis is going to be looking for an opportunity to legitimately compete in camp and I don't think that's happening here. Howell, Lance, Minshew, I'll also add Mariota... I think those types of guys are legit options.

This is a partially bad take.  Willis is the only guy mentioned here that can reasonably be expected to perform at a level higher than Bryce.  Winston and Minshew is washed, and Howell was not good in Washington as a starter and didn’t field a single snap this past year. I swear the only reason people are obsessed over him is that he went to UNC.

You’re not going to have better success, or even potential for success with those guys as your QB as you would with Bryce. Now, if you want to argue this thing from a production per dollars perspective, that it’d be better to roll with one of them instead because we could allocate the savings elsewhere on the roster, that’d be a better argument IMO. I’d disagree with it; relying on a QB making less they $5MM/year that isn’t on a rookie contract is not a winning strategy.  But I could see the argument that it’s possibly a viable alternative to Bryce on a $25MM/year contract.

But no, none of those QBs are better than Bryce.

Well the argument will be if we keep winning enough games you won't ever draft high enough to replace him. Unless you trade up again or get lucky and a Lamar like player drops to you in the teens or 20s

I doubt they'll have incentive to replace him unless the team noticeably dips in W-L record next year.

Well it depends on the price, if he's willing to get paid like the 20th best QB, I'm fine with a long term contract lol.  But if he wants top 10 or 15 money, nope.

Top 20 is 30m a year now.

I don't think we should spent $27m on a replacement level player.

I'm a Miami Hurricanes fan, so I have zero affinity for Howell, he's just objectively a better QB than Young.

None of them are better other than Willis who I brought up

I don't think any of those guys are accepting a contract to backup Bryce Young. It's insulting.
