PFF Best Deep Ball Thrower Award

I feel some of you need a reminder - or maybe to learn for the first time - what a BTT is. Because it isn't a deep ball.  It's a subjective assessment of a throw:

"PFF grades on a plus/minus scale, in which players are rewarded for positive plays above expectation and penalized for negative plays in increments of 0.5. Throws graded at the higher end of PFF's scale (+1.0, +1.5, and +2.0) are categorized as big-time throws. The lower range of the scale (-1.0, -1.5, and -2.0) are classified as turnover-worthy plays."

So Bryce had the highest number of graded throws at +1 to +2 of any NFL QB. Really? Keep in mind that Bryce ultimately ended up with one of the bottom PFF grades for a starting QB.  This almost has to mean he also had the most turnover worthy plays or he'd be graded much higher overall.

I actually think Bryce is better than his actual PFF grade (26th in the league). But the highest number of well-rated throws in the league? C'mon.

That line about ‘above expectation’… the whole thing is so subjective. And unquantifiable due to the nature of it. Endless variables when the grader needs to make almost a split second determination of what the expectation should even be.

They try, I know. I can even give them the benefit of assuming good faith.  But that is so subjective and the name they gave it is pure hype. What about it is big time? Granted some throws are great but a plus one throw n September doesn’t seem to automatically deserve the label big time.

Would look to rename it with less hyperbolic label. That is my biggest objection really.

Big time were the throws on 4th down in the last qtr vs the Rams. Those, all day long. Excellent and for sure under big time pressure. Some other throws too. But that kind of throw seems to be a smaller fraction of what they use to calculate their grade.

Reason being is he only throws it outside to one on one coverage to a big receiver. Lofts it up there because he has no arm strength. Look up yac on completions over 20 yards Im willing to bet it's dead last. Moral of the story is tmac and Coker are really good

this will always be his issue. Because of either bad footwork or lack of arm strength he lofts those deeper balls. thats why he doesnt really attack the middle of the field. you cant float those passes there or its a pick. a lot of time those deep passes, wr had to slow down to catch it. you cant have an offense where you dont attack the middle of the field.

You're delusional. I'm the biggest Howell cheerleader here and all of us are just saying to bring him in because A) he'd be dirt cheap and B) he has more talent than Bryce. That's it, that's all.

I would like to see Howell. His contract should be similar to Andy Dalton’s. It is imperative to have a solid backup quarterback.

Bingo.

Because everything they've done to this point says they know he's not and they're working very hard to try and hide that fact.

What proof do you have that they "know he's not the one"? Are you prevy to some insider information or is this just your opinion. Just seems to me that if they knew he's not the one, then why pick up the 5th year option. And why would they hide that fact that he's not the one. After all, they didn't draft him and continuing to play him knowing he isn't "the one" just makes them look bad.

He basically only throws it deep when the WR is high school wide open.

I've watched him throw the ball away on 4th down. Are we really surprised cherry picked stats look good when he outright refuses to throw into tight windows, something literally every other QB in the NFL does.

It's like saying someone in the NBA is a great shooter because of their field goal percentage - nevermind that they ONLY shoot wide open layups, refuse to shoot otherwise and average 5 points a game.

Zoom out and look at big picture metrics, the complete story looks alot different - 27th in scoring (despite an above average supporting cast), 32nd in yards-per-attempt, 30th in yards-per-game.
