Baker isn’t mid tier. lol. Geno played well. Mac Jones is looking like another possible starter. Malik Willis just got a big contract. He wasn’t a first but still he was considered a bust. Daniel Jones was a MVP candidate before the injury, Jared Goff was benched for a no name QB in the playoffs and out of the door. We will see what happens to Murray.

Trevor Lawrence was looking like a bust and now that he has a new coach those talks have went away.

Yeah Baker was a pro bowler and took the Browns to the playoffs, he just got unlucky to have Haslam as an owner do the whole Deshaun Watson thing among his many other blunders. Carolina had the right idea with him we just had that idiot Rhule. Sam Darnold is a bigger outlier than people think. Geno Smith was a backup or out of the league for it seems like a decade, idk exactly how long but it was a long time. And that Seattle team he looked so good with won the Super Bowl the year they upgraded QB and he went back to being total garbage on a less talented team. People thinking Darnolds are everywhere now.

Well the coaches would disagree.

Bryce has shown improvement each year so there’s still hope. Next year will be the year I think for certain we will know if he’s the guy or not. He’s still only 24 and to give up ok a qb that early is just dumb.

The coaches and GM disagree. Well damn. A coach that got zero calls to coach for any other team and a GM that learned at the feet of one of the worst GMs in NFL history. Forgive me if I find their resume lacking.

3rd year starting QB that only eclipsed 3k yards on the last play of the season. He may be 24 but his extension is on the horizon. Bryce wouldn't have the unconditional QB1 spot on any other team with a competent GM. 1st round QB extensions come right about now. Are you willing to lock Bryce in at 50m a season for the next 5 years? If you aren't, you should be looking for plan B.

Well that sucks. I really was hoping we wouldn't waste money on a Pickett/Howell/Fields worthless roster spot. Just roll with Andy again, if Bryce goes down you get a high pick and get to try again at QB in the draft. I've never seen the point of half assing it and drafting some mid round guy or journeyman backup.

Unfortunately I like Pickett the least out of those three.

Bryce has not proven a damn thing to be QB1. We should be exploring options everywhere. Find someone with the tools who may or may not be able to develop, but at least has the physical ability to do the job. Pickett has none of those things. This is just a different way to keep any pressure off of Bryce. There will be no mid round QB.

Who? All this hand wringing but there wasn’t really anybody out there who was coming to Carolina. Murray and Willis weren’t coming here, so who else? We’re in agreement Pickett sucks and we could have maybe gotten a different backup for better money, I just don’t agree that there’s anybody out there that fits what you really want. You saying “physical ability” leads me to believe you want Trey Lance or Zach Wilson which would just be lol if so. I heard Jamarcus Russell is available these days, some scouts say he was the best thrower of the football they ever seen. I mean in terms of relatively young “1st round talent” types, Pickett is about the best there was unless there’s some big names I’m missing. Don’t forget we also tried Hendon Hooker last year and the dude couldn’t make it off the practice squad.

I said earlier I think we should have looked at Howell or Levis if he's released. Howell was not good in Washington as a starter but he was under constant pressure with zero running game. Levis, who knows. He has the tools but has been bone headed at times. Lance, maybe. He wasn't ready when he was drafted. I'd even go for a draft pick with tools over Pickett. Pickett is no threat to Bryce and that's what I believe was the entire point.

I personally do not think we are done at the back-up QB position. I think they will spend a late round pick on a QB or USDA to compete with Pickett.

You don't pay what we did to Pickett to compete for a backup roll. The job is his. Bryce is guaranteed starter. We may take a shot at a QB but it won't be anyone serious. Probably someone the same level as Plummer.

I mean I’d be fine with either of those but expecting them to push Bryce Young for QB1 any more than Pickett would just seems like wishful thinking and more of “they signed a 1st rd pick reclamation project type but not the one I like most therefore they don’t want to win football games”.

    • So the last guy who had the job got hired by his former team directly into a role he has no direct experience in?
    • Hard to pass up millions for a couple of days work per week for a coaching gig in the NFL that is 60-80 hours each week during the season and a more relaxed 50 hours a week during the off season. Yeah, I'd love to see him as our DC but hard to see him giving up the cushy job there if he gets it. And he's going to be a great commentator for the network.
    • Really, I think that is where negotiations come in. If you've got a QB getting you to 10 wins but statistically he's not a great performer, then you say look you can take $22 million or you can try it on the market. Because let's face it, out there, any leadership skills that we're seeing aren't going to be on the table, it's just going to be performance and that lands him in the QB2 market, which is much, much less lucrative (although any of us would love that money).  No one is saying that Bryce will be a $50 million QB, barring something short of a miraculous jump. I'm just saying that if we are winning somehow with him at the helm, then it would be fuging stupid to dive back into the rookie pool all over again. Let's say we do hit the 10 win mark, heck, let's call it 11 and a second round in the playoffs. I think we can all say that would be a really uplifting result and one that should be doable if we have good play. What do we do then? Here's what I would offer if I were Morgan and Tepper. $25 million a year for 3 years, each year with up to $10 million in incentives for touchdowns, wins, playoff depth, being under 10 interceptions, completing a full season, passing yardage milestones, taking less than 15 sacks. Look, Bryce isn't a Ferrari, he isn't a Corvette, or a mid-level BMW. He's probably a new Toyota Sienna that will definitely get you somewhere and bring the whole team along with it, no fuss but not a lot of pizazz.  And really, it's about the destination, not about what drove you there.
