Dan Morgan Pre-Draft press conference

Recommended Posts

Bill Polian and Bill Lekas on Chalk Talks SiriusXM radio this morning.  Polian needs to retire (again). First he talks about Andy Dalton as our backup and then suggests trading down to get Sadiq. Clueless. At least he brought up the hole losing Ashawn Robinson caused.

Isn't he the one who said Lamar Jackson should be moved to WR or CB the year he came out?

If a wide receiver is the best player available at 19, Morgan said he “wouldn’t hesitate” to draft him.

#Panthers GM Dan Morgan says he doesn’t think there’s a rule against selecting a WR in the first round three years in a row.

He says he’s always going to take the best player available.

There isn't but it would help if he and his draft scouts would stop targeting the same type of WR. Maybe put extra emphasis on hands and route running instead of constantly chasing RAS. Just a thought...

That's a very true statement. The reason Bryce threw to Thielen so much is he was exactly where he's supposed to be. Everything has to be about anticipation and timing with his size. Can't change that so gotta prioritize WRs knowing where to be and the hands so we don't have wasted plays

Ha I know right.  It makes since for them to ride out his option years and see if he can take another step forward. If not our next QB steps into a good  situation. If you look at Drew Bree's' stats his first 3 seasons in San Diego they're pretty similar to Bryce's and those offenses had a lot of talent. Best case is he takes that same kind of leap now. I don't know if he's got that in him but we're about to find out for sure

Here are my takeaways from the conference (IMO):

- Is Dan against taking a WR 3 years in a row? No. Would that be his preference? Also, no. Not by a long shot.

- I think draft gurus are wrong. Tight end is not an early priority. They like the guys in the building enough to see them develop, but a later round guy is being looked at (just seemed like he was able to label a couple of guys "talented", but stopped short of suggesting the class is good at the top. Seemed quick to talk about the depth of the class)

- If we are taking a DL, it will be in the top 2 rounds. They fall off a cliff at some point soon after.

- They are targeting guys in each round. I think we are more likely to move up than down in this draft to prevent missing out on a guy. He doesn't want to give up a lot though, man loves his draft picks.

- DBs are a priority. We want to come away with a safety and a nickel. Maybe even a safety that can play nickel. Thieneman sounds more and more like a real possibility, if he is there. We are taking a safety in the first 2 rounds, if I had to put money on it.

- Age matters more for 1st round picks, probably (Mesidor), but not for after that (Stukes).

- They have a guy or two that they want in the 1st round, but crazy things DO happen in the draft, and they may shift gears and take a different guy if someone falls that they didn't expect to be there.

- Character matters. A LOT. If a guy has character concerns of any kind, you can be pretty confident they aren't on our board. They may bring in a guy or two for a visit to gauge the validity/severity of the concern though.
